Alright, first off, all the "there is no god" and "every atheist is going to hell" threads that come up every few days: They don't convince anyone of anything, they just get people mad

To the atheists: the basis of society is religion, that never changed and never will. Get over it making religion smaller isn't going to make anything "better" even if it isn't true

To religious zealots: flaming doesn't spread religion, it just spreads hate, I know most religious texts tell you to spread religion, but to reuse an overused phrase You're doing it wrong

So let me just finish this by saying to let people be wrong

As for let people be wrong if they wish, it's not a matter of right and wrong.

Suppose someone has discovered a truth - how are they supposed to show others unless they are open to their ideas?

I was referring to it solely in the case of religion...

As for the the discovery of the 'truth', what proof is there?

You shouldn't assume that there is no way to prove the truth. I'm working on a few things - like proving evolution must exist. That can be proven, actually, and logically, too. I posted it somewhere...

Justice was not developed by religion, but a sense of morals and ethics, that were held true by the leaders/wise men of the time.

but the idea of morality stems from religion

anyway back on topic
If they aren't the same, then I would be curious, and ask them why the believe what the do, but not label someone's beliefs are "dumb" or "uninformed."

this is what I was trying to adress because, occasionaly some guy comes on to label somebody's beliefs as "dumb" or "uninformed", yes this is a place for arguement and discussion

I did not think that a topic about occasional outbursts would garner so much popularity.

Origination of morality =/= you must be religious to be a moral person.

Fallacious thinking ^

Really? I'm not religious, does that mean I am amoral?

My morals come from my own sense of right and wrong, while I admit that religious influence during my childhood played a part in the development of my morals, it was not the only thing, and it most definitely not the most important.

Oh and btw people, by "the basis of society" I was trying to refer to Law, not the reason for forming of society

This is even further removed from the formation of societies. Yes there are laws that are religiously based however there are plenty more that rely on basic common sense regardless of if it might match one religious interpretation or another.

but the idea of morality stems from religion

No it doesn't group morality stems from social interactions within a group.

I think that's one of the biggest things about Atheists. Many people believe that just because we do not believe in a god or some higher being, that means that we are inately immoral and selfish. This is just not true. Religion is by no means moral in of itself. In fact, religion probably increases immoral acts because of hate due to seperate beliefs, whereas Atheism has no such argument. Just because we do not believe in a higher being, that does not mean that we do not value other people, or only act in order to get into some eternal paradise. That's just shallow, acting good because you think you will be accepted into some other place when you die, and if you only act that way for that reason then I don't think i'd really like to be around you.

Actually it's more amoral than it is immoral, atleast in my expereince.

Personally, I'd trust a person who does good out of their own generosity than some who does it because they feel they will be rewarded by paradise at the end of their life.
