There's been a lot of controversy around Yale law professor Amy Chau's memoir,Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. In this book,Chau explains her strict way of parenting , why Chinese parents are far superior to Westerners , and how they can make their children into piano prodigies, ect.

She makes her 2 daughters play the violin and piano continuesly for hours without breaks for water , or even the bathroom , does not allow them to have sleepovers/playdates , ect.I myself am half Chinese(other half : Taiwanese),and I myself am not treated under these strict parenting "techniques".What do you think of this ?

*Information from TIME magazine, and various news stations.

Do you have any real facts that that is infact normal, or just profiling?

Yes.

Personal friends and colleagues. I've also seen a documentary unrelated to this topic. Yet the same style of parenting was seen in the video. Granted, everything has an exception. However, the majority is following this. And you misunderstood almost everything I stated. Culture is also a heavy influence. Chinese/Eastern parents tend to value skill and education, where anything less then the absoulute best is seen as the wrong path to go, while western parents lean toward individual unique attributes.

Can someone with real knowlege and facts talk about this?

My opinion is based off of personal experience. Nowhere did I say it was fact and nothing but fact. However, you're free to feel as you wish. At the end of the day, I posted my opinions on a public Forum. If those opinions affect you negatively, or you see them in a negative light, it is not my concern. Live and let live.

[quote]Creativity is killed. A child is barred from experimination and hearing new ideas. They are taught to learn and reply by rote.

Exactly. A lot of Chinese kids raised like this (in China think is) cannot think for themselves well. Sure, they know a lot, but they don't really know what to do with that knowledge besides put it to whatever job it's for, and, yes, verbal abuse is not the best motivation. Personally, I think the best motivation is trying to prove someone wrong (Usually your parents. Works with me :/)
