I ran a full system scan a few days ago, Norton Antivirus 2010.
The software stated that it scanned about 260,000 files.

Just today I scanned my computer again. I have not deleted any files, or programs or anything.
The software (Norton Antivirus 2010) stated that it scanned only about 160,000 files.

I've noticed the number of files fluctuate before, but never by this much. It's about a 100,000 file difference.

My theory is that my computer has gotten a bad virus and that the virus is actually stopping Norton Antivirus from scanning the whole computer. So, although, the software says I have no viruses found, this is only because the virus itself has stopped the scan early.

Any thoughts, suggestions, help?

Obviously, if you scan your computer every few days, you're paranoid.

Have you changed any settings? Permissions? etc?

However if nothing else comes up I wouldn't worry about it.

No I haven't touched them.

The number goes up and down but usually no more than a few thousand, which makes sense I'm sure program updates and what not increase the file size or decrease it depending.

A 100,000 file loss in a few days is very suspicious to me.

Norton sucks. It has so many false alerts. Just Google any comparison of Norton and any other virus protection and Norton will fail.

Get avast! and see if it still shows you lost those files.

Well, I can say this. Norton out performed the crudy Kaspersky antivirus that my computer came bundled with. Also my computer has no trouble running Norton Antivirus and didn't take up that much memory on install. It is Norton Antivurs 2010.

I can try avast because it's free and the others. I'll see what happens.

It probably scanned files that were most vulnerable and left the others alone since you scan like everday.

The best thing you can do is install a better antivirus. Like Avira, Avast or some other free antivrus. Paid ones are mostly a rip off since they don't do much better than the free ones and in some instances the same or worse.

McAffee

AVG is decent.

There is no such thing as scanning your computer too much.

1. Download AVG and make sure you keep it updated and set a scheduled scan at least once a week.

2. Download Glary Utilities and run it daily if you can.

3. Download some back ups, like Malware Bytes or Ad-Aware to make sure you scan EVERYTHING.

I will run several cleaning programs like this and they each catch different things.

Also, make sure your browser has plenty of security add-ons like WOT, ad-block, disconnect, etc.

I have McAfee, but on my old computer I think I had Norton. Anyways,
don't worry. There are different types of scans, full and quick, so if you did a full scan the first day and a quick scan the next, that's probably why there wasn't as much stuff. Also, if you don't notice anything missing, I probably wouldn't get too worried.

This might have been what happened. I scanned it again and the file count was back to normal.

After reading all the advice, I plan on downloading some of the freeware virus and adware scanners. Does anyone know if I can run and install to antivirus programs at once? or will the conflict with each other?

From what people have told me they will conflict with each other.
Just go on the site that have the free antivirus, disable your current one, download the new one.
Yesterday my free trial with Norton ran out. I went on Firefox then installed AVG and it's just great. My computer is much faster then before.

I'm surprised that a Mod hasn't created an "Antivirus, Antimalware, and how to tune up your computer" thread, detailing all the free software and utilities that can fix and speed up your computer.

There's:
AVG (antivirus and anti-spyware)
Avast (antivirus and anti-spyware)
Malwarebytes (anti-malware
Glary Utilities (utility)
Hijackthis (utility)
