Which songs have been covered by other artists but are better than the original?

Man Who Sold the World - David Bowie; Covered by Nirvana
Nirvana's sound just sounds slower. The song really sounds like a slow song, not a fast one like how David Bowie did it.

War Pigs - Black Sabbath; Covered by Cake
Black Sabbath's sound is loud and metallic. Cake's is soft and smooth. Even though War Pigs' lyrics are dark, Cake does a great job.

Never, Ever Gonna Give You Up - Barry White; Covered by Cake
Barry White's voice leads the melody, and I don't really like songs like that. Cake backs up the voice with instruments.

The Guitar Man - Bread; Covered by Cake
Both are good, but Cake just sounds better.

I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor; Covered by Cake
Both are really nice. They are equal.

Barry White is covered by cake?

Right... That sounded better in my head.

Anyways, here I go:

I Turn To You, cover by Machinae Supremacy. Not sure who made the original.

Lil' Red Riding Hood, cover by Bowling For Soup. Original by "Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs".

Ever Fallen In Love, by Billy Talent. Original by The Buzzcocks, and the original is amazing as well, even though Billy Talent's version is slightly better.

It's The End of the World As We Know It, by Riddlin' Kids. Original by REM.

True. I like both, but R.E.M.'s version is too fast.

Some covers done by Sonata Arctica:
- Still Loving You, Scorpions cover
- I Want Out, Helloween cover
- Out In The Fields, Gary Moore & Phil Lynott cover
- Die With Your Boots On, Iron Maiden cover
- Fade To Black, Metallica cover
- World In My Eyes, Depeche Mode cover

If you want other really great covers of older songs, try Northern Kings:
- We Don't Need Another Hero, Tina Turner cover
- Take On Me, A-HA cover
- Don't Stop Believin', Journey cover
- In The Air Tonight, Phil Collins cover
- I Just Died In Your Arms Tonight, Cutting Crew cover
- Don't Bring Me Down, Electric Light Orchestra cover
- and many many more...

Important: Most of these covers can't even be compared to the original; both SA and Northern Kings took the songs and made something different out of them. But I generally prefer to listen to these covers than to the originals.

Hahiha.... you sir have beat me to the punch. but i have a few to add to the NK songs

Broken Wings - Tony Kakko of the Northern Kings / Sonata Arctica
Hello
Brothers in Arms
Kiss from a Rose

Van Canto's

Fear of the Dark (Iron Maiden)
Master of Puppets (Metallica)
Wishmaster (Nightwish)
Battery (Metallica)

the VC covers are arguable as to whether or not they're better than the originals... but they're kick A so they deserve mention. I'm not much of a Maiden or Metallica fan but I do enjoy the covers of their songs by VC and SA.

kinda here on a quick visit... so just youtube the song titles if you're interested.

I like all of Green Day's covers from My Generation to anything they play live. I also like when Nirvana played The Man Who Sold The World which was originally David Bowie.

Man On the Silver Mountain - Originally by Rainbow, covered by Hammerfall

Have to disagree with you there. Nobody can match Dio's voice.

Anyways.

Batman Theme - Covered by The Who
Highway Star (Deep Purple) - Covered by Stryper

My Sharona - originally by The Knack, covered by Hammerfall

I'm surprised nobody mentioned this yet. The drums seem to be deeper, and the guitar is much more powerful. Far surpasses the original in my opinion.
