You don't NEED one, but loads of people have them because it's a way to talk and share things with people all over the world no matter where you are. Facebook is a social network for people to hang out (Like the mall was a long time ago), so people often get on it instead of using phone bills or texts or drive to places, if you ask me, I think people can share stuff, but shouldn't spend to much dwelling on facebook, and more time hanging out in reality.
It's because everyone else has it, people nowadays are really influenced by those around them and because they want to "fit in", they go and grab one as well.
Simplest answer conformity driven by social integration and an overall good system. Personally I don't touch it since I have REAL life friends that I talk to. I don't' need every high school graduate adding me as a friend and then up getting spammed by 500+ useless social tidbits.
instead of using phone bills or texts or drive to places
Counterpoints: MSN/Skype, walking distance and home phone.
Also facebooks lax policies on handling of personal information would drive me up the wall.
OMG SOME MANY DUMB QUESTIONS TODAY! People like to connect with friends or if they don't they want to have tons of facebook friends. Facebook is usually used to keep up with what's happening and communicate in an easy way. Some people just join because their friends ask them to. I use Facebook and I use it for good reasons, Or so I think. I have a Facebook because I like to keep up with news, friends, and events. I think it's an easy way to get communication done. Do I have the question right or not? You didn't phrase it very well.
2) I was fortunate to find a friendly community here.
3) I prefer message boards over social networking business.
4) I'm a bit archaic. I don't buy into the popularity of social networking. Sure, I was bought into being pressured by others but I've cast that aside.
5) I don't feel like carrying any real life baggage onto other sites.
6) Zuckerberg himself doesn't believe much in having privacy.
7) Meh, I still value my privacy.
8) I've been aware of social networking for a while. Never been overly amused.
9) I find enough time to talk to my friends in person. If I need to I can still call or send them text messages.
10) Plenty of people I know have joined the Facebook bandwagon. It adds to the distaste.
11) I'm paranoid.
12) I prefer not being hounded by people I know.
13) If I removed all the elements that forced me to steer clear from taking up being on FB full-time, it'd negate the value of being there in the first place.
14) Internet forums are still relevant.
15) I take a liking to Armor Games.
16) I enjoy the community (or what's left of it, for the pessimists)
17) Too much free time.
18) I don't have the money to play better games.
19) I don't have the willingness to post in larger forums.
Quick question, why everyone in AG don't go to Kongregate immediately? Because they don't like the people there, the skin of the site, etc. It's the same for facebook for me.
When Facebook first started, as "The Facebook" it probably became popular because (like they said in the movie) it's exclusivity. Being part of it was like being part of an exclusive club.
It also may have gained popularity by being a newer novel idea (myspace and friendster did exist as well but they were all novel at the time.)
Now Facebook is popular becasue it's popular. It seems like a paradox. But people join because their friends are on it. People feel left out when they don't have one. And unfortunately it's a way to invite people out to events. You really miss out if you don't have one, too some degree at least.
I don't think Facebook is necessary for me. I never liked it actually. I think only people who are really active and like sharing things like the Facebook. And what would I have one if only few friends use it?
It's because everyone else has it, people nowadays are really influenced by those around them and because they want to "fit in", they go and grab one as well.
ok mr. nonconformist preaching goth kid :P
butt ya facebook is mindless but its freaking fun. its also a great way to follow whats happening with musicians and stuff. like when mike portnoy left dream theater, do you know how everyone found out first? facebook
but the only thing I hear people do on it is play Farmville.
That happens a lot with my friends. They think Farmville is awesome but it is just stupid in my opinion. My mom uses Facebook and she plays that Lucky Cookies thing.
