In the Gulags, people were forced to work, given very little food, and were taken in, sometimes just upon suspicion that you were a threat to Communism. They were random, indiscriminate, and killed far more people than Hitler's camps.
Why is it that Stalin killed about three times more people than Hitler, yet not very many people know about it? I have heard some say that it is the way they were killed, but at the same time, both were similar. Many people died just from diseases and starvation. Gas chambers, you could say, are the only thing that you can claim make Hitler's camps worse.
Both were horrific, but one gets much more attention. I mean, quality over quantity, but the quality has very minute differences.
The only thing I can think of, that makes the Holocaust more famous (not worse), than Stalin's holocaust, and that is the Iron Curtain.
Hell, we only found out about Hitler's Camps after 1945, when the war was over. The Iron Curtain separated all of the USSR from the world. Why does the Iron Curtain have such a big impact, since we found out about both after they had caused so much destruction, and after the countries were "defeated."
Theres all this genocide going on right now, just as bad as hitler if not worse but people don't even regonize it. CNN and other news outlets just show cats getting saved from trees for a good rating, people don't want to see genocide so they don't show it, so no one cares about it.
They didn't know about the Gulags until much after. My question is, why is it that Stalin didn't get as much attention. Is it because that happened forty years before they found out?
time has nothing to do in this matter, since today or in the future we will remember hitler as a horrible man. as RedLlama says nobody cares. the reason why people give more attention to hitler is because europeans where directly touched by him, whereas stalin was murdering his own people, in addition in russian minds there is no room for complaints, it's the reason why we don't hear from the russian side about the bad things even to this day.

What genocide would you be speaking of? It wouldn't happen to be the genocide of individuality and free thought, would it? Because AG is a great example that free thought, is indeed not dead.

Yes, but does it really matter if I go into your territory and kill two guys or if I stay in my territory, but murder 18 guys? Yes.

of course it does. if you kill people in my country that makes you an ennemie of mine, whereas if you kill people in your country that doesn't really concernes me. for exemple when you hear that there was a suicide bombing and x people where dead none of which are from your country, does it "touches" you?

Yes, you make an enemy, but you are worse for humanity in general.

it's true, what you are saying but not many people view humanity as one whole. we divide inconsciously or consciously ourselves into groups even as kids. (i don't know if it's a good thing or bad). and i totally agree with you, to me homicide is a worst possible thing that a man can do. and i almost forgot, we know that many leaders in the Middle-East and Africa are corrupt, and don't respect basic human rights. No other country interviend. the reason is very simple: in that regions lays a terrorist threat(extremists can take the power) that's why it's safer for northen country to let tyran rule rather than a somebody dangerous to them. it was and is the same way for ussr(russia) not the extremist part but the threat. as to why it isn't very discussed, in my, is because nobody besides, the victims and they relatives cares that much(i don't see any other reasons)
Well, I can just say that the Iron Curtain had the greatest effect. Plus, we couldn't condemn the USSR after what happened with the Cold War since what happened there was so long ago.
Three things affected people's opinions:
1. The Iron Curtain and lack on information
2. High tensions with the USSR
3. Between the time it happened and the time we found out about it, the emotions had faded. If we learned about it in the first ten years after, we would be more concerned than after fifty years.
