Depends on what exactly you would call a chicken egg. Would the egg be a chicken egg if it was laid by something that was not quite a chicken, but contained something that was, or would the mother have to already be a chicken for it to be called a chicken egg? If it's the latter, it's an easy question.

from the evolution perspective... the thing that laid the first chicken egg wouldn't have had DNA that was 100% chicken... the embryo in the egg would've had mutations that made it somewhat different from the parent (enough to be the current day view of a chicken)... i didn't explain that too well, but I hope the point got across

That question ought to be, "which came first? The 99%-dinosaur-1%-chicken or the 100%-chicken egg?" In which case it would be Dino-hen.

Dino-hen.

Are you talking about the Archeopterix? ;-D

I guess I could be talking about an archeopterix, but I just thought Dino-hen sounded funny.

I think Chuck Norris. But seriously, the chicken. The egg couldn't survive with no mother.

It's already been answered, and this thread has been made before. For those of you who still don't get it, the chicken egg came before the chicken. Thanks for coming out and playing. A cursory google search will net numerous scientific publications illustrating the varied reasons why, and several have been stated here.

you guys are looking at animals as being static... meaning they don't change or evolve... when they're actually dynamic, which means that they evolve.. Whatever came b4 the chicken laid the egg (some bird'esque creature)... and the mutated/evolved what is accepted nowadays as a chicken creature was located in the egg... which then hatched and became the first chicken... which then procreated w/ its siblings or its closely related pseudo chicken brethren and eventually all of their offsprings offspring (several offspring later) created the different varieties of chicken we have today.

It is very complicated. The chicken would have to lay the egg. But where would the chicken come from. The chicken would have had to come from and egg. But where did the egg come from. The chicken would have had to come from an egg but where did the chicken come from...... etc.

Best answer I ever came across to this old conundrum was, an earlier type of chicken.

ok this is my opinion. lets say god exists (for those who dont believe). if he would make a chicken it would be able to live on its own BUT if he would made an egg first there wouldnt be anyone to sit on it or take care of it. so i think the chicken was first

I think that the egg came first, and then there was a mutation that changed the chicken-like egg to a chicken egg.

Depends. Creationism teaches that the chicken came first. Evolution teaches that the egg came first.

What a silly question for you to ask since the answer is impossible to determine.
