I am being raised in a family that isn't really prone to free thought. If they saw half the stuff I post on here, they would be mortified, but I don't care...

Anyways, I have been indoctrinated my entire life to believe the bible and all of it's teachings unquestionably.

Is it right for my parents to do that? Why, if the Church likes the idea of free will so much, do they try to make everyone a Christian, rather than allowing them to make up their own minds?

They teach you some of that stuff, but you don't have to listen to them.

I mean it's their right to raise you the way they want to, to a certain degree. I know I would be upset if someone told me how to raise my future kids.

What if there is no Heaven? I would have wasted my life waiting for something that isn't real. That never was.

Exactly, so you can keep yourself out of trouble and be accepted to heaven and live for eternity. It also teaches some principles of life to get along with one another

So they had to use the bible? They couldn't just pass down the good principles and then showed me material that may or may not be correct and had me make up my mind about it?

I really liked that video Mage. It seems like a great way to have your kids grow up.

Quite supprisingly, you guys are also suffering from similar things. Perhaps we could discuss this, instead whether it is right or wrong to indoctrinate. Maybe post your view points on how your parents have affected you and whether or not you resent them for the things they have done.

H.L Mencken

What's up with you quoting this guy all the time. I have never even heard of him.

And I do understand why atheists are ticked. Honestly, I do. That is part of the reason I started this thread. Not for atheists, but to say why indoctrination is such a horrible thing.

(note, I have no religion, so I'm stating facts that are not biased)

Why, if the Church likes the idea of free will so much, do they try to make everyone a Christian, rather than allowing them to make up their own minds?

Roman Catholicism (the root of all religions based on one god and jesus) when it first started made these rules (that they are the only true religion) so that they had more power and influence over other religions.

The best way to understand this is to study the early days of this religion. Christianity was a minor religion in the days of the Roman Empire. Everyone hated them and tried to blame big events on them. The turning point for these people was when the emperor at that time, Constantine 1 or Constantine the Great, declared that christianity would become the state (national) religion.

This meant that:
1. they just received massive power
2. the empire was massive, so that meant widespread changes in temples and the official religion
3. according to their doctrine (the part that says that they are the only true religion, and one god), that all the other religions at that time were now invalid and had to be destroyed (literally)

So, using points 2 and 3, they went across the lands owned and not owned by the romans to spread their religion, and on the way, destroyed all the others. These are the main reasons why Christianity (in all it's forms) is the biggest, worldwide religion.

They thought that all other religions were not good or evil. They also thought that these religions would lead their people to hell. In order to "save" these people, they had to convert them to the "true" religion. whether it's the true religion or not is up to you.

Does this answer your question Valkery?

Kind of... I was more asking your opinion as to wheter or not it is decent for parents to only show you one of the many religons out there, and then expect you to believe it unconditionally.

Well if I were you, I would respect how your parents raise you, and at the same time to explore and find out what's out there. You may find a piece of one religion to be good and incorporate it into your beliefs. And besides, it's good to expand what you know and to be able to understand why people are doing certain things that you think is weird.

That's all well and good, if you can, but what if there is a family that won't let you look at any other religion, or belief, just because they say that it is wrong? How can that be right? It defies human nature to learn and explore and expound upon our knowledge.

Also, being a deist, I already have taken what I want from christianity, and combined it with a faith that doesn't ask to much of me, but to believe that there is a god.

I got myself un-baptised because i dont agree that it happened when i was a baby. Parents should wait until you are old enough to decide for yourself. Im not religious but i dont knock it either... Peoples choice i say. Although some people are so fanatical that they ram it down their childrens throats! Thats a shame when that happens.

How do they do that? Do they use unholy water? Jk..

Anyway, I may do something like that in the future, just so I can say I am not baptized. It's a similar thing to you, I got baptized well before I was able to decide for myself.

You may or may not take my words (because i'm just a guy who learns about religions without practicing them), but i think that you must do what you think is right. i would try to talk about religions in general with your parents and see if you can shine a light on that topic. if not, then learn about religions without practicing them.

If the way they are raising someone is to isolate them from experiencing any other beliefs, then how is going behind their back and that person exploring them respecting that?

What exactly is the point of doing that? If that particular religion is nonsense then any of it's practices hold no real value. So there would be no real difference between being baptized or not.
