I am being raised in a family that isn't really prone to free thought. If they saw half the stuff I post on here, they would be mortified, but I don't care...
Anyways, I have been indoctrinated my entire life to believe the bible and all of it's teachings unquestionably.
Is it right for my parents to do that? Why, if the Church likes the idea of free will so much, do they try to make everyone a Christian, rather than allowing them to make up their own minds?
w/ respect to the indoctrination... your parents believe that and/or are convinced that there is an eternal paradise and maybe an eternal hell that goes alongside it.
If you don't believe in the religion they've taught you or any religion for that matter then understand that what they do they do because they quite possibly love you and hope that you will reap the benefits that they believe come w/ believing in said faith and practicing said faith. Just because parents believe and teach in a certain way doesn't mean that is what the child will in fact believe in. ie... you.... and all those that are complaining about being preached to during your childhood. Eventually you gain enough of your own critical thinking skills that you can decide on how you want to go about believing (or not believing) for the rest of your life (which is subject to change throughout the course of your life)... you act as if people can't ever develop the skills to think and make their own decisions... even if it means making a complete 180 from what you've grown up being taught. Unless they're physically abusing the child (or mentally... and no, telling about a religion is not mental abuse >_> parents have the right to teach their children whatever they want to teach them.
Or would you rather have everyone ripped from the care of their parents as children and just grow up in bording schools? I personally would opt to stay with my parents and family... even tho family connections were something that was instilled in me in my upbringing, I see no reason to cast that one away like you and religion... so that's my reasoning for my position on staying w/ my parents and allowing them to teach me what they want to
