Very few peoples never used to enjoy mass executions, qwerty. Also since gladiators rarely died in the fightings it's pretty much the same of our boxing matches.
Also, what does Greece have anything to do with this?
They were one of the most sophisticated cultures in history. They contributed so much to the fields of rhetoric, science, and arithmetic

I note that you are ignoring Christians, slaves, criminals etc and at the end of a bout the losing gladiator had a reasonable chance of dying. As much as some people would like it to be this is not part of modern boxing
....So are you ignoring the Dark Ages where thousands and thousands were killed for being witches or died off from the Black Plague? We aren't saying gladiator fights are not bad; killing in any case is terrible, but it just isn't as catastrophic as some other eras, and thus does not belong in this thread.
Christians, yeah, but there have been worse genocides in history. It's even hard to call that a genocide, most of the horrible idea we have about it is just the church's propaganda. Slaves, they was the main "energy" of the empire, I really can't see why they needed to be killed... Criminals, as I said before, most peoples on the earth had public executions. Even in the French revolution's times people still went to see executions for entertainment. And again, training and maintaining a good gladiator was very expensive, they hardly ever actually killed them.
@Tacky Yes, I meant civilized era. @Qwerty Roman era? Umm... Sorry, but no. The middle ages had 1/6 of the world's population wiped out, Romans only wiped out, maybe... 1/100 of the world's population. Also, the fall of the Roman empire could've been bad, because it destroyed tons of the stuff they had been building on.
So you answer and expect no one to criticize you? You're a confusing person.
No i answer and think i am entitled to my own opinion. And the whole entertainment factor of the executions is just wrong. And it wasn't that they found pleasure in killing people it was designed for entertainment. And the middle ages had loads of plagues so it doesn't really count.
The gladiators were slaves, criminals and volunteers. They did it for glory and many would have been killed anyway. Fighting others and animals is better than being crucified.

Not necessarily, many were forced to fight although only a handful chose to fight. I also completely agree with you on the fact that Fighting others and animals is better than being crucified because at least you had a chance to gain your freedom. Most of the time, if your crime wasn't that bad, you had a choice between death, or fighting and having a chance to gain your freedoms back again. You'd still have to build your life back if you won your gladiator match(s).
And the middle ages had loads of plagues so it doesn't really count.
We aren't talking about the amount of people killed...we're talking about the worst era. So you're saying that a plague that wiped out a third of Europe is better than a period where several advancements were made and gladiator fights were held to keep the public happy? I don't really understand your way of thinking. What on earth do you mean when you say it doesn't count? It's not a game.
I definitely consider the Dark Ages to be the darkest and most horrifying period in human history. The fall of the Roman empire left the known world in chaos, we basically lost 1000 years worth of medical advances, culture, and philosophy. Yes we did manage to recover some of it, but there are no doubt countless amounts of books and scrolls that were lost forever in the looting and pillaging that occurred.

I mean that the plagues weren't anyones fault but the fact that the romans executed people in that way makes it the worst era in my opinion based on the human brutality employed.
