Well, if you always half the distance, technically you'd never get there.
Though, you'd most likely reach the door after two steps, when you were two feet away. Maybe even after one step, when you are four feet away, if you don't mind looking a bit silly while reaching for it.
By the way, I think you did get the answer to my riddle right (tried to verify but got a bit distracted, anyway). So that all know, you were supposed to call out what you saw in the line above and write what you said. This is how "1" became "11" (you had to say "one one".
