That got your attention, didn't it! Seriously though, democracy would easily fail if the country was full of idiots, wouldn't it? Wouldn't it better to have an extremely strong checks and balance system within the government and not let people vote?
Democracy does suck, but it's the least sucky alternative out there.
It's true that a dictatorship would be the best option if the country had a selfless, intelligent, 100% incorruptible leader. However, if the dictator would abuse his powers, he could cause a lot more damage than any democratic government ever could.
So, yeah, dictatorship is not bad in itself, but it's risky, while democracy works alright but with a lot fewer risks.

If we had a very strong checks and balances system the evil leader wouldn't be able to do anything evil.

In a perfect world, yeah you're right. But in reality, dictatorships NEVER work. The US dose't even have a full democracy because the citizen's vote is next to useless and one party has the advantage over the other. Democrats have the 2 BIG electoral states in California and New York. They pretty much win these states easily every time but, the Republicans win more states because of the South. So what do we do?
No, it wouldn't. You're assuming that everyone within the government would be smarter than the people. This is debatable.
A C&B system is supposed to make sure that no single person or group has too much power. It doesn't have anything to do with how effective and smart decisions are.
A strong C&B system run by morons can fail as well as democracy or dictatorship. A C&B system is not a solution. It just has nothing to do with the problem you presented us. There is no correlation.
A true democracy, in which everybody votes on one proposal, would fail in a country any larger than, say, Luxembourge (SP?). A Republic, on the other hand, is... sturdy, to put it in layman's terms. Not impregnable, not invincible, just sturdy. But then again, when it comes to dictatorship... well, look at the Roman Empire. THAT lasted for OVER 9000 years. Not really, but still.
Of course democracy would easily fail if the country was full of idiots, and that is the case for any other political system. Following your reasoning, every single political system sucks. I agree totally But democracy is the best alternative I know of, it is a good trade-off between offering a political lead and respecting people's opinion.
Democracy can only work in a country where the masses are idiots. Idiots are fairly easy to manipulate.
Uh well actually, a pure democracy would be THE WORST thing to have if your country is full of idiots. In the U.S, the people elect people who are best suited to represent the people, aka a representitive democracy. The masses themselves only choose those who will represent them, they themselves are not calling the major major shots.
