Can't they at least have separate rooms for those who are shameless enough to watch porn in public? Seriously. Won't somebody PLEASE think of the children!
But yeah. Messed up. If they keep that up, I'm guessing parents will actually try to keep their kids away from libraries. Doubt the kids will complain, though.
"Customers can watch whatever they want on the computer," said Brooklyn Public Library spokeswoman Malika Granville
In other words, people may be looking at some really nasty stuff.
Also...
Library patron Daisy Nazario, 60, said she was grossed out when she discovered she was sitting next to an elderly porn watcher in the Brooklyn Central Library recently.
The looker was using library-provided extensions on the sides of his computer to block the view of his screen -- which was featuring a threesome at the time -- "but I could still hear the voices," a disgusted Nazario said.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't libraries generally very strict with noise? I mean, you're not supposed to disturb people who read and stuff by talking loud, so how can watching porn with sound be allowed?
And besides... Really... Who the fork would watch porn in public? That's just messed up. Anyways, I think they should move some computers into a separate room, and let the perverted freaks hang out in there.

What qualifies as nasty?

Can't say I agree with that, he should be wearing headphones at least.

If I had an account on that site, I would be going crazy. Some of the things in the comments are comical.
"The founding fathers wouldn't have approved of this." That's probably some of the biggest bull I've heard. The founding fathers wanted to limit government power, whether they would have supported the pornography or not is an invalid point because the founding fathers all had different ideas and beliefs when it came to government. The only thing they agreed on is that there should be rights that the government can not violate.
For example, I doubt Ben Franklin would have been very offended.
I suppose the library would be "censoring" pornography if they didn't allow people to look it up. In this case, I suppose it would be against the first amendment. I'm not exactly sure how they get away with censoring TV and radio though...
If you're using a government service to look something up, is the government allowed to tell you what you can and can not look up? It's either yes or no, there is no "it depends what you're trying to look up."
I have read comments where people are complaining because they aren't paying taxes so that perverts can look up porn, but the perverts are also tax payers. Of course, I understand how it feels knowing your taxes are paying for things you wouldn't normally support.
I'm not exactly sure if the first amendment allows you to use government services however you want to. It's a weird situation. I mean, the government shouldn't be allowed to block websites, but can they control how public property is being used? I'm actually uncertain about this.
Why pay for it if you're watching it in a library? Do you have to pay if you want to watch a documentary film in the library? It should be handled like any other visual media; but I agree with creating a separate area for this category and wearing headphones (which should be an obligation for watching any films anyway).
The paying is to shut up all the people saying they don't want their taxes going to that (and to keep hoboes out). It would be a nominal fee, maybe $5 an hour.
That's pitiful. I mean, honestly, do it at home! And if you don't have a computer, don't bother going to a library, because it's not like you can get it off in a library! I can understand how people could have their hands tied preventing this, but it's just disgusting.

Well I am British so I don't really know about the laws in America but it creates a lot more controversy than any other visual media and it should cost money. In my local library it costs money to watch borrow a DVD so why should porn be allowed for free since for many people it is a disapproved of practice. And who is going to protest anyway.

Well.. that kinda makes sense.

If the rest also costs money to watch in the library itself, then of course it should also cost money to watch a porno. My point is, it should not cost more money only because of what it is. But if there are good reasons behind it, then why not.

People are paying taxes so that everyone can use the library computers however they please, not so that they can watch porn. If you create a room specifically for the purpose of watching porn and other adult videos, then the tax payers will definitely, without debate, be paying for people to watch porn.
Creating a room for porn to make people shut up about where there taxes are going is counter productive because it not only fails to solve the fact the people's tax dollars are being used to help people watch porn, but now their money is being used to actually encourage it. Instead of having computers anyone can use for anything with the occasional pervert, you now have rooms dedicated to perverts.
Anyways, I think they should move some computers into a separate room, and let the perverted freaks hang out in there.
This is a habit that should be discouraged not encouraged at a public library. It should be banned on the basis that there are children there and separate accommodation shouldn't be provided since the habit should be discouraged
