Sometimes it just takes some good old fashioned southern hospitality to get the job done right.
Now I imagine some of you agree and some could quite possibly disagree with what happened. I know that aside from the religious threads there are those who are almost exclusively political social science oriented. I'd enjoy hearing from some of you who I never get the chance to discuss w/... as well as any of the usual crew I talk w/ who don't normally frequent this kind of thing.... its like Politics... and Religions....
I addressed that. The article says the man ran his mouth and made someone mad enough to lash out. We're talking about a group of people who indoctrinates their children from birth to hate everyone that's not a part of their congregation. I don't know what was said but I'm pretty sure the guy told everyone there that the marine was going to hell and everyone else here in Mississippi was too. The people there probably told him to stop talking and he wouldn't... he slandered the name of the wrong guy's friend/brother most likely and ended up having his mouth closed for him.
but then again it could've totally been... "there's one of those loonies lets beat the crap out of him".... and the info presented in the article could be wrong. From what they are and how they work I put the most probability in the slandering option. as I said... there are other possibilities.
as presented... the actual protest of the protest was peaceful.
i'm a fairly faithful religious person, but these people disgust me. i hope they get the **** beat out of them every day of their lives that they try to do anything like this.
I'm just glad they died. They're all a bunch of idiots. Politically smart, they're word has been out on a lot of media outlets that tell of what they want out of these protests. Good way to get people to remember the name. Still, they're all stupid. I'm not for the war but I wouldn't screw something like that over.
i feel the laws we have here in america are perfectly fair, WBC wasnt breaking the law.. they might have deserved to get beaten, but its against the law, and its wrong
Sorry to say it, but that's really repressive. Henry Thoreau, MLK, Ghandi, etc, etc, etc, all practiced civil disobedience. They all went to jail, too. Technically, they were 'wrong' and 'against the law'.
I'm not advocating being crazy here, but normal society understands what Funerals are for, and though laws are difficult when it comes to putting out exactly what you want in them in a sophisticated manner, a government should be flexible enough to clear problems like this when -- if asked by the majority of Americans, is something that could have and should have been swept away easily by representatives. The only current rules against Free Speech are those that stop any that presents a clear and present danger, and we can assemble wherever. Add a safety law for military victims, saying they're off grounds for assembly. Idk.
Sure. The Westboro Baptists church are malevolent iditos, MoFos, who easily deserved to be punched in the face. But isn't it an insult to try and stop them from doing so?
The soldiers they are protesting, at least most of them, died fighting for things like "Freedom", which included freedom of speech and expression. The Worstboro where doing things technically legally, if not ethically, in the clear. Attempting to censor them would be taking away their freedom of speech, something the soldier died for. Wouldn't it be better to let them speak, but to just ignore them or say otherwise?
you could say that. but w/ a degree of uncertainty I can almost certainly say that if you were to ask those people if they wanted them protesting at their funeral they'd most likely say no. justifying protesting at the funeral of the person who died in the process that allows you to have the right to protest is seemingly in bad taste. according to the free speech thing they do in fact have that. but there are lots of other times where these protests could be done. plus, a protest done in a time like this isn't going to further any agenda you have, unless its just to troll people. Its just going to hurt feelings... and no1 will like you or listen to you. Its not the first time this has happened w/ them. other towns have done the same. The general consensus of the population is they don't want them and they'd rather the family and loved ones mourn in peace w/o someone yelling "GOD BLESS HANDGRENADES" in the background. I don't see anyone on the outside fighting for them to protest at the funerals at the different instances.... that's the problems with certain things we view as self evident... for those who want to you can easily go against the grain and call out the name of some rule that lets you do so...and have everyone hate you.
we differ on a philosophical point here... I know the law says one thing, but I disagree with it.
they need to have a questionaire for those in the military... "do you care if people protest at your funeral if you die in the military?" ...and that'll solve it. I would think that people also have the right to a proper funeral... my version of proper is w/o protestors... but that's just me.
you could say that. but w/ a degree of uncertainty I can almost certainly say that if you were to ask those people if they wanted them protesting at their funeral they'd most likely say no.
But if you asked a different question, like "Can you stand it?" or "Do you believe they are in their rights?" then they would probably say "Yes".
justifying protesting at the funeral of the person who died in the process that allows you to have the right to protest is seemingly in bad taste.
I can't see the people being justified in doing it, but they are in their rights. We can't take away those rights, or the soldiers died for nothing. Understand that I am not standing up for Westboro, but for free speech, which everyone deserves and everyone will get withing a country that continues to value it. The soldiers valued it, and died for it, you would be spitting on their graves worse than the Westboro had if you take away rights the soldiers fought so hard to earn.
according to the free speech thing they do in fact have that. but there are lots of other times where these protests could be done.
Its their free speech, for them to use how they want it. That is why it is free speech.
plus, a protest done in a time like this isn't going to further any agenda you have, unless its just to troll people.
Does it matter? Its their right. No matter how much you don't like what they are saying, no matter how much I don't like what they are saying, they are allowed to say it.
It is still their right. You can't censer someone just because you don't like what they are saying.
we differ on a philosophical point here... I know the law says one thing, but I disagree with it.
That is too bad. This is one of the greatest laws ever produced by man, the one that lets me get up and say "I am an atheist". The one that lets people get up and say "I do/n't support the war." the one that lets you have your own opinions, without getting punished for saying them in public.
I'm of the view point that it is more disrespectful to fallen military, and serving military to suppress freedom of speech. You can vehemently disagree with them. However, a lot of people have died throughout our countries history to ensure they have that freedom.
Freedom of speech isn't any good if we only appreciate it when people are saying things we like to hear.
Attempting to censor them would be taking away their freedom of speech, something the soldier died for. Wouldn't it be better to let them speak, but to just ignore them or say otherwise?
if they aren't appreciative of the fact that these soldiers died for them, then i say who cares if people try and censor them.
if they aren't appreciative of the fact that these soldiers died for them, then i say who cares if people try and censor them.
And I say by limiting their free speech we're mocking the death of the soldier more than the church; isn't the foremost job of an American soldier to defend our right?
Also I feel the need to point out that this is much more of a political issue than it is a religious one so please avoid harping about that.
I laughed like crazy when I read what they did to the WBC! X^D
I hate the WBC. You can say they're exercising freedom of speech, but the Constitution doesn't protect libel and slander, which is what I consider their actions to be.
I think the WBC is more of a scam church than anything. Fred Phelps is a disbarred lawyer, and I believe he's trying to be as offensive as possible so he can sue groups for denying him the right to protest. More info can be found here: http://kanewj.com/wbc/

I can't stand the WBC because they give a horrible reputation to the word "church". But what I think it's interesting that though it never says the guys who did this are atheist or not, it does show that there are other extremist who do thing outside the 1rst amendment rights to get things done. I think everyone should see this and take it into consideration.
I can't wait till God just sends a big ol' lightning bolt right up their a**!! haha, talk about southern comfort. But seriously, they are probably the biggest idiots that I have ever seen in my life

Leviticus 20:13 - If a man also lie with mankind, as he lieth with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be upon them.

I won't touch this, history speaks for itself in the terms of the reputation of any church.
