Why would most melee weapons have a limited amount of hits?

I prefer cricket bats. One of my favorite sports, and a nice shape.

It's no fun to hit your opponent when they aren't reacting. If you just straight up kill them, they don't say "Ow!" when you hit them, and you don't benefit at all from hitting them.

I've always wanted to try out a mace.

Looks like a great weapon for zombies, it's a long weapon. You can slash down on the top of the head, or stab the forehead. Slash sounds easier.
