Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has accused Western countries of plotting to "cause drought" in Iran by using high tech equipment to drain the clouds of raindrops.

This does not dignify a response...and who in hell made him the president?

I believe that it was the Muslim religious leaders.

Oh, and just to clarify, the first link is to a news article, the second is to a movie.

I knew it, it's all a conspiracy. The government is stealing all the rain for themselves so that in 2012 they can use the rain to flood the world so that they can start a new empire once the water dries up.

Also, "Moments after the Iranian president made the startling claim at the inauguration of a dam in a central province, it started to rain." That made me laugh even harder.

But in all seriousness, does he actually think that making crazy accusations will benefit them in any way?

Well, a tech of causing rain to drop in a particular spot exists, however it requires clouds above the spot, and reagents. But I don't think a large-scale tech like this is possible at this tech level.

Wouldn't this sort of technology be, uh, quite visible? I mean if you're employing something that's going to suck the clouds from the sky or repel them (Stealing raindrops is the most moronic way to put it, since clouds are just water vapor) over an entire country would be easy to see? Also weather maps would show just a hole.

Maybe someone built giant bellows in the south that blows hot and dry air to Iran, blowing the coulds away to the north onto the next big mountains where they start raining and loose water... but like Kasic has put it, something of this size should be visible, be it only on weather maps. Anyway Ahmadinejad is a dangerous malevolent crazy guy. I'm not surprized by those accusations coming from him.

"Western countries have designed plans to cause drought in certain areas of the world, including Iran," Mr Ahmadinejad said in the city of Arak in Markazi province.

Methinks Rain Man has been watching too much Batman/Superman/etc, because that definitely sounds like something you'd expect from one of the super villains that appear there.

its so absurd it sounds more like something a supervillain ina comedy spoof would do rather than in any comic

Making it not rain, seems something like a deity would do. Is he saying the west is god now?

Well, he apparently does think we have a lot of power. I'd rather go for devil instead of god though. He surely thinks we are demons.

(US Government): Haha! Iran will never think that our CIA is stealing water!

(NATO): Umm..., you should see this. The Iranian prez knows you are stealing water...

US: Hmmmm...invade Mexico to provide a diversion!

After these events, the US goes on to conquer all of North America. Thanks Iran! :P

Living in israel, I can assure you that one of the main national problems is not enough fresh water. So, no.
