Ok since someone else couldn't create this topic I did. First of all I would like by start saying I dislike the Westboro Baptist Church very much. They insult, invade privacy, and do some of the worst things possible to U.S. soldiers coming home and at their funerals. There beliefs are created off of a few scriptures that the Devil owns the World and we are all doomed. Luckily Anonymous hacked their website and showed them some sweet justice. Anonymous also said that they are professional trolls and that they said to bring it on.

I don't like the Wetboro, of course, but I can not support hackers hacking their websites. They have freedom of speech, at least here in America, so they can say whatever they want. They can be as ******** if they want. Censoring them is wrong and really accomplishes nothing, why do it?

Umm... Anonymous said the same thing that 314d1 said about freedom of speech.

Also the Anonymous said they didn't do it and that it was a scam created by themselves.

I do not agree with what this church does, however, in America freedom of speech will always win in these types of situations...

Freedom of speech is a very good idea, but I believe that it should be tempered with a bit of freedom of fists. I feel that if you go around being ****ing, dumb ***, sorry, *** hole *******s, expect to get your sorry *** kicked. If you are of the Westboro Baptist Church and meet me on the street, only tell me that fact if you wish to die.

I find this issue hard to deal with, my natural instinct is to want to physically attack them, and then outlaw they're stupid church, but then my sense of freedom kicks in, attacking them is a crime, and them voicing their misguided views is not. so in that case they would be in the right, I cannot cope with the thought of their freedoms being repressed as this will make us as bad as they say we are, but at the same time I also cannot cope with the thought that they go unpunished for voicing their hateful message in vastly inappropriate places

Just to give people an outline of WBC beliefs;

WBC will picket Taking Back Sunday at The Showbox Concert with a message for those in attendance, to wit: God Hates ***s, and God Hates ***-Enablers; ergo, God Hates america and america is Doomed! This nation is awash in filthy sin and idolatry, including your pop stars like Taking Back Sunday who have the ear of millions and refuse to use that platform God gave them to teach obedience to God's standards. If they opened their mouths to warn you that your sins are taking you to hell, their concerts would be empty, as would their pockets and bank accounts. They will give an account to God for their failure to do their duty.

=

They're entitled to their freedom of speech, but i for one hope that on justice day they're condemned for neglecting every other teaching in scripture.

I don't think it's right that the phelps family initated their children into a hateful lifestyle from no age, it's clear on their appearance on the tyra banks show that they're lost, they contradict themselves.

One of the Bible's main messages in family values:

Pity WBC doesn't pay attention to anything decent in the bible.

I'd just like to say that i feel nothing but disgust for WBCs teachings and the videos/links provided were for informative purposes only and not to offend people.
I do however acknowledge their right to freedom of speech.

4chan and Anonymous cannot be beat.

I disagree with the people saying "freedom of speech, man" because this nearly transcends it. It's violent hate speech, and should be treated and dealt with as such. They picket funerals of homosexual men, with their "God hates ***s" signs and are overall, a despicable bunch. Enough is enough, free speech shouldn't be taken to this extent. It's a disgrace, and I fully support Anonymous and similar groups.

To clarify, these are army/marines who served the country. I believe one girl who didn't want to go all out for the picketing was promptly disowned by her family, it's pretty freaky. They should be given less attention, and be punished swiftly, (hopefully harshly too).

But how will you punish them fairly because in the future others will be said the same for lesser hate speeches.

While I am all for freedom of speech, there must be a line to what can and cannot be said.

As a Canadian I too have freedom of speech, but our freedom of speech is, at least to a small degree, tempered. We can say what we want, but it cannot willfully instill hatred and cause danger to an idividual or group.

Example A: A man can go around hanging pro-Nazi posters in his neighbourhood.

Example B: A man cannot deliberately speak out in a way that has the potential to start a riot, such as shouting "Fire!" in a movie theatre.

Now, I believe that should a group like WBC ever appear in the public eye here in Canada, they would be criminally charged. What the WBC is inspire hatred, and cause willful damage to people.

@ Scarlett, you're correct. Freedom of speech is a necessity in life, and we should feel privledged that we have it, as many countries oppress their people to an extent we cannot imagine BUT it must be curbed, there must be a degree to which this can go, and WBC obvioubly go beyond this.

@wolf; just to help your point:

Can't they be charged for something? They go around and protest funerals. Maybe for discrimination? It just seems too unfair that they can do this and just get off with nothing.

You know, the KKK was originally a religous organization. If white-robed KKK members were walking down the street with signs saying "If you're not white, GOD HATES YOU!", they would be arested for extreme discrimination. I don't know why the WBC's discrimination is considered acceptable.

"Phelps earned a law degree from Washburn University in 1962, and founded the Phelps Chartered law firm in 1964.[citation needed] The first notable cases were related to civil rights. "I systematically brought down the Jim Crow laws of this town," he claims.

In the 1980s, Phelps received awards from the Greater Kansas City Chapter of Blacks in Government and the Bonner Springs branch of the NAACP, for his work on behalf of black clients."

This genuinely shocked me.

Also;

Fred Phelps, the 'leader' of WBC was convicted for disorderly conduct for verbal harassment in 1994, but his sentence was suspended. The following year he was arrested for battery and was looking at a lengthy sentence but because he didn't ask for the process of trial to be sped up, this was also suspended. They were also sued for picketing a soldiers funeral, however the trial was a joke and the costs just kept decreasing and made no real impact on their organsation.

Both him and his wife are banned from entering the UK because of WBCs plans to picket here.
