There have been a few threads like this, but I haven't seen one in a while. So, I've been listening to Dream Theater a lot lately. Stuff like Octavarium and Images and Words. Mike Portnoy really is a machine. Most of you know that he left though, and he got replaced by one of the best drummers in the world right now, Mike Mangini. They have a new single out with Mangini and he's unbelievable. This made me want to listen to songs with really good drumming in them. So, I'm wondering what other drummers people on AG like. My other favorites are Chad Smith (RHCP), Neil Peart, Travis Smith (ex-Trivium), Jason Costa (All That Remains), Keith Moon (the Who), John Bonham (Led Zeppelin, I also encourage people to listen to When the Levee Breaks by them, good drumming in that song), Dave Lombardo (Slayer), Bill Ward (Black Sabbath), Carl Palmer, Tomas Haake (Meshuggah), and Lars Ulrich (Metallica). I probably forgot a few, but share your favorites.
Mike Mangini is one of the most overrated drummers ever. I listen to him and I think "Really? What in the world to people see in this guy?"
Brann Dailor is one of my favorites. I can't really stand BTBAM but Blake Richardson is a very tight, very precise drummer. Martin Lopez (Ex-Opeth) and Martin Axenrot (Opeth) are both very impressive drummers. Danny Carry from Tool is up there, although I don't hold him as high as a lot of people seem to.

He's considered one of the best in the world right now. If you listen to the new DT song, at one point, he uses his bass drums to double what the guitar and bass are playing (Petrucci, Myung), but then he's using one hand on his high hat to double the keyboard (Ruddess). That's a very impressive poly-rhythm. He also holds the record for most single strokes in a minute with a matched grip, and had the record for traditional grip. That's why he's considered great.

ive always admired mike mangini even before he was a consideration for dream theater. he is a phenominal musician. whats the big deal you ask? number one he was a college professor at berkley college of music in boston, hes also the world record holder for fastest single strokes in 1 minute. so LITERALLY he is the fastest drummer of all time. his credentials are off the charts.
the tthing that i like best about mike though is his dynamics. the dude is an amazing musician and is as good as any drummer out there.
just look at this drum solo right here. hes not just blasting the drums as fast and as hard as he can. hes making true music while still displaying an impressive amount of rudimentary knowledge and skill.

That shows that he also knows a lot about music. Like, crazy time signatures and other theory. I've been playing the trumpet for 8 years and I still have trouble with some time signatures. He's the closest you can get to MP, but he's basically everything MP was and more. He's a master of the instrument.
Knowledge of music theory fails to impress me. He's in a band that plays a type of progressive music, so knowing a lot about music theory is par for the course. Really, it's like being impressed with a mathematician that's memorized the quadratic formula.
His world record and teaching position are impressive, though. :P
Shannon Lucas (ex All That Remains, now The Black Dahlia murder), who I feel play in a higher league than Jason Costa Romain Goulon (Necrophagist), I probably like him more for the way he plays, although he is quite skilled Matt Holland (Man Must Die), very solid drummer I'd say.
Then there's guys like George Kollias who have amazing skill and speed, although I never listen to their music.

I personally believe that Costa is as good, or better, than Lucas. Because I think that The Fall of Ideals is an incredible album, their best, because Phil's voice was amazing, and Lucas played amazingly, but Costa is like a robot. If you watch him play, not even in a concert, but in a video, he's literally a machine. It's unreal.
if you guys have ever heard of the band "the word alive" (who by the way is in my song of the week thread... CHECK IT OUT, its stickied) they have an AMAZING drummer
i can only have respect for a drummer like Rick Allen
but my most favorite drummer is from machine head: Dave McClain also because ive been whit them on their touring car after a show when evry1 was alrdy off to home and i and 2 friends were still waiting for some1 to pick us up. we had a great time in their toering car =D

Oh my God, how the hell could I forget Dave? The dude's an absolute animal on the drums. He's been playing for like 30+ years and he's one of the most underrated in metal. He's a natural. Absolutely incredible drummer. So excited for their new album.

:O I was waiting in line at Mayhem to meet them and then some guy at the table announced their bus broke down and couldn't make it to the signing. Some guy in front of me and my friends was so pissed lol. But at least I got to see them live.
I actually know him, sort of. His sisters and I are in the same choir.
No way! That's awesome! Knowing someone from August Burns Red... Lucky you. :P
As for my favorite drummer, I don't really know. I would pick Longineu Parsons from Yellowcard, but I now know there are many more drummers out there with more skill.
So yeah, I don't really know. Does the drum machine that does the drums for Animals As Leaders count as a drummer?

hehe well i was just very lucky. they came out the building about 2 hours after the show was over. they recognized us because we were standing up front the whole show. and my friend is a drummer himself and dave saw him synchronis his drums. we had a few beer whit them smoked a joint (was in the netherlands) and about 2 hours laters our driver finaly showed up and then it toke about a hour befor we left them. it was 1 amazing night that i will never forgot. true awsome. Robb Flynn is a realy funny guy btw joking around all the time xD
the guy who did the drum tracks's name is matt halpern, but due to issues i dont know, hes not in the band anymore and the drummer Navene Koperweis is.
Jimmy "The Rev" Sullivan the dead drummer of Avenged Sevenfold wasn't an epic drummer like all these, just a commemoration of his life in drumming R.I.P
