As the thread name says, I'm here to talk about YouTube downloaders.
It was on YouTube forums where I asked about these. Needless to say it was rather unpleasant. *shudders*
Anyway, everyone on the forum there was all over me saying things like, "It's against copyright laws and YouTube has forbidden it in their T&C."
I know it's against copyright laws, but you can get the same video from your temp folder in your computer.
So, here's the debate; In your opinion, is it right or wrong to "download" from YouTube?
My opinion;
Yes and no. The copyrights are there to protect people's ability to make money. On the other hand, it's just like when the VCR first came out and everyone was recording movies and TV shows illegally.
I'm wondering why YouTube doesn't sue computer programs like MiniTube.
I wondered that too. It seems odd that they would go after ordinary people instead of the software companies that are giving people the tools to download.
Sounds like the, "guns don't kill people, people kill people" theory to me.
So, I did some more research and found this FAQ on a YouTube downloader's website.
I can download the video file into my computer, is legal?
Yes, when you watch a video in flash from a website (like YouTube) the video is downloaded into your computer, in the folder "Temporary Internet Files" of your browser. The program does the same thing, allowing you to select the destination folder. This means that the file is saved on your computer while you watch the video and there remains until you do delete it.
As I said before, the videos go into your temp folder. Then, they added this:
What kind of use I can do of video file?
You can use the video saved for personal use only. We do not assume any responsibility to content you are attempting to download and strongly recommend that you do not download copyrighted material.
I had checked a few months ago and that FAQ was not there. They must have gotten a "come to court now" type letter.
Note that this is an Italian site (because of the poor grammar).
I don't download videos, but i'll rip the songs and convert it to mp3. I see no problem with it.
This. You can listen to anysong on You Tube for free, but if you want to listen to it somewhere away from your computer your expected to buy it? I use a firefox addon that adds a mp3 download button to all You Tube videos.
if you put it on your iPod you should have bought it legal in iTunes
Arent most iTunes songs a dollar or something? So if I want a thousand songs I pay a thousand dollars? Theres not a thousand songs I want, but there are hundreds I know of and like.
And, theres an "add file" option underfile. Why is that there? It lets you easily add files to your itunes, so they expect that your adding music from some where else?

If you have the CD and rip it from your CD, I guess that's what it's there for. But, it does make it easy to put illegally downloaded music onto your iPod.
