So far, I'm preferring games from the past. The golden age of gaming. Where games relied on storyline and gameplay, rather than how it looked or how powerful the effects were.
To the second question: no! Games do not need to be realistic at all! Sometimes they are so nonsensical that it contributes to the fun!
There is, and always will be a certain nostalgia about the older games.

These new games that feature all the high end graphics and real physic engines ...well..its like the new 3D movies of today. The movie, or game, is based only on the function of engine. Its the special effects that they are trying to sell and not the storyline, or the fact that its just a fun, or good game/movie. All the bells and whistles of the realistic engines are extremely demanding on today's graphics cards and how they are rendered. 1. most people don't have high end computers with high end graphics cards. 2. there IS a new method of rendering graphics but its sill very new and I have yet to see it in the market. I've only read about it a few years back and have heard nothing since then. I'm starting to worry that the business that was developing it went under. ;( 3. Realism is just another form, but I don't think it needs to be the utmost importance. Simplicity is the answer. It has been, but its hiding behind its loud mouth and flashy brother.
Games are just on a path and right now there are soo many games on the market and there are a lot to many different age groups. I really think there needs to be a better rating system in place because some kids games really are not meant for some kids. Even if they don't get the references, they heard them, they see them and are connecting dots incorrectly. But that's a completely different topic.
past for me. they focused on the things that are important to me like the story and gameplay and now they usually focus on graphics. i remember when video games had a really good balance like starfox and final fantasy.
I prefer games whose storyline is from the past. I am not just after good graphics, but I choose games where I can also learn. I'm playing Uncharted Waters Online now. 15th-17h century storyline makes you study history minus the hassle of goin to school lol.
