Gilad Shalit, an Israeli who has been held prisoner, is set to be released starting tomorrow, after being held in captivity (without the rights he's entitled from the Geneva conventions) for more then 5 years. Tomorrow Israel will begin the trading of 1027 prisoners, for just one man. Do you think this trade is a good idea? By doing this, Israel is sending the message to the Palestinians that we are willing to make these absurd trades, which they may take advantage of in future situations. Supposedly, 70% of Israelis support the trade. Also, it isn't even known if Israel is getting Galid dead or alive.
I think it's fine. Over 1000 to 1 seems a bit much, but if they believe it's necessary, then OK. Technically it's kind of an insult to Palestine saying 'one of our citizens is worth a thousand of yours!'

That's how they seem to want it. I can tell you Israel doesn't want the trade to be this absurd, but this is the only amount that the Palestinians are willing to settle for.
Also I think the deal was that not 1 Palestinian was released until he was safely returned, but I'm not sure.
Actually, the first batch of 27 Palestinian women were released prior to the release of Gilad Shalit. While I feel this is good for Israel, I also foresee problems arising with terrorists getting more emboldened to try to gain more captives, to release more terrorists.
I don't think any extreme killers were released. It was mostly illegal immigrants and those who committed petty crimes. They were trying to get this guy released, but he wasn't.
Ok nvm. The way the news phrased it, it sounded like none of them were really terrible. Just found the list on Wiki of the worst ones. This was a stupid deal. They should've kept the release limited to those who didn't do much.
Israel is continuing the trend of giving lots of prisoners for one captive. It is an important part of the Jewish laws. "On Mar 14, 1979 the captured soldier was returned in exchange for 76 terrorists" "On May 21, 1985 the two soldiers held by Ahmad Jubril's organization were returned in addition to Hezi Shai, a soldier captured in the Sultan Ya'aqub battle. In exchange for the soldiers, Israel released 1150 terrorists." " On Nov 23, 1983 the six soldiers held by the Fatah were returned in exchange for 4700 terrorists that were arrested in the Ansar detention facility in Lebanon and 65 terrorists held in Israeli prisons." ect.
There were many high-profile terrorists in the deal, but deals of this kind uphold IDF's high morale. The terms of the deal haven't changed much in the last 5 years he was there.
Bad, because Israel is dealing with terrorists. Good, because, duh, a young man gets to see his family again. And his family is spared the tears of his demise.
I really can't pick which is better. Being a country that has been dealing with terrorists ever since we were founded, I can't decide on what I'd pick. I live in Turkey, by the way.
