probably to entertain the player in boring parts or in some games special music for boss battles. First.

First.

I don't get why you included that...

Well I had another topic up and someone posted that they found music to be an important quality of a game, so I was asking why do you personaly think it is needed.
Btw I highly dout it's just for some entertainment.

Because music is essential in setting the theme of the game. In a scary game, it makes you feel scared. In an open world game, it might give you the feeling of adventure. Then there are games like Left 4 Dead. In L4D, every time a special infected approaches, the music changes to reflect what type of infected it is. While this helps set the mood immensely, it also helps prepare you. People who have played the game a bit, know which music corresponds to which enemy, and know what they are going to fight before they fight it.

But wouldn't no music be scarier and put you on edge since you can't know what's comming except for their footsteps? It puts the player more in tune with the game if there is no music, my veiw is music is reinforcing that forth wall.

There are no footsteps and it's not like it's silent to start with, there are hordes of other zombies.

Uh, that's doesn't make any sense. I think you mean breaking the forth wall, which i will completely disagree with you on. If it does anything, it makes the game more immersive. It helps make the setting. Have you ever heard of a movie with a bad soundtrack? The same goes for video games, music enhances the experience.

Music basically enhances the game, but on a lesser level than other factors. A game could have good music, but still be a terrible game.
I personally think that good theme music is essential for boss fights, however.

Music in a game is bad? Let's take a look at some of these soundtracks, and let's see what you think.

Halo, Crysis 2, Battlefield, Morrowind, and there are others as well. Music defines games, a simple few notes from a game can instantly put a player into the mindset of the game, ready to act in an instant to what the Protagonist has to do to save the day.

Let's not forget Final Fantasy VII.

It should be also noted... what do you think makes most montages epic?

That, and awesome editing - espeically the middle one.
The middle one had music made by Globus which is part of Immediate Music - they make trailer music, and it's awesome

Some people want it, some don't. That's why you can mute it.

music is really important to me in a video game. most people enjoy music anyway, so not only they enjoy the video game they also enjoy listening to music. my mom is the same as you though, she turns it off. but i always turn it up. actually, video game music is probably my fav type of music because those melodies also remind you of parts you really liked about a video game. for example, people who played ff7 will probably enjoy aeris theme more then people who havnt, even though people who havnt played it might love it as well. it really helps to get you inside the game

No, because breaking it is making the person feel like he is part of the game, the music puts more distance btwn you and the game.
You say it adds to the experisnce, but I say it takes away from it, like you will never run into someone you have to fight and all of the sudden boss music comes on in RL, I think it just makes it more distanced from the RL.

Music sets the mood. When you hear this in Left 4 dead. S*** just got real.

Left 4 dead does a really good job of using music to give you information or to set the mood.

There are many more examples in many more different games.

I don't think it sets the mood as much as just adds some backround noise, if I'm going to use backround noise, I'm going to just use whitenoise and not worry about "setting the mood". I persoanly just see the advantage of having music in montages and things, but not in the actual game unless it isn't comming from an all godly source and is actualy from a radio or something.
