Almost fanatically loyal, Richthofen joined at the beginning of the war, having been fooled by the recruitment propaganda and under the belief that the war was a good place and that he was serving Germany. When he first saw a concentration camp, however, he learned quickly that was not the case. Instead of deserting, which would've gotten him killed and been very dishonorable, Richthofen instead decided to continue serving Germany, but will defer to the Geneva Convention as well. "Get down!" Richthofen calls in German, then again in English. "Everyone...stay back," he continues in German. "I will proceed alone." He takes all of his weapons and hands them over to Wagner. "What are you doing, sir?" Beckenbauer asks in German, looking shocked. "I need to prove to them that I mean no harm at the moment," Richthofen explains in German. "You," he says to the Americans in English. "It is regrettable, but you will have to walk in front of me. Your snipers would not shoot one of their countrymen, but they would not hesitate to kill a German soldier. I will walk with you to the medical building. At that point, you will enter that building and I will turn back and return to this building. If you can, inform your allies of my intention. Good luck."
