The MGs provide suppressive fire for the infantrymen while they do this so that they don't get shot.

the italians there are still 75, the americans about 100 troops and about 10 tanks left, and they're right at the trenches.
The infantrymen and assault troops(Richthofen, Metzinger, Beckenbauer, Straussenberg, and the 2 unnamed soldiers) pull the Americans closest to the trenches in, and engage in hand to hand combat. The machine gunners fall back to a slightly further away position, but still in cover, and continue firing at the enemies who aren't in the trenches yet. How are we supposed to deal with the tanks
