They are the same as the Knights of Rhodes (aka Knights Hospitaller, Knights of Saint Johns).
They were defeated in Rhodes by the Ottomans with 400 ships and 100000 men in 1522. Suleiman allowed them to retreat. Later they settled and fortified their stronghold in Malta and resisted to the powerful Ottoman army (composed of Galleys, giant cannons and Janissary in 1565. Which contributed in stopping the Ottoman expansion due to their heavy loss but they still controlled most of the Mediterranean Sea.
