WELL...thats depressing. ummm what about testing video games

You either work for the company and spend hours testing any game they lay out in front of you. Or you can do play tests at your nearest developer or publisher. Where they offer people free games for testing upcoming releases and writing about your experience. I've done dozens of play-tests at the EA near me, it's not bad there is a lot of writing involved but you hardly even remember doing it between playing the games. The problem is the EA near me is the one that makes sports and racing games so a lot of the playtesting sessions are not my cup of tea.

I think it would be pretty fun, alot of work, but fun! I'm acutally trying into a game designing class so I could create my own characters, but I have to be a junior to do it. Oh well, time to play the waiting game.

Well, I have read a article on a Dutch site about game testing and that is is very "hard" because most people think it is just playing a buggy pre release of a game, but what this guy's team did was just enter the same map over and over and over and see if there are any bugs. He thinks that if u can't take repeating stuff you can't be a game tester. There was 1 interview translated to Dutch from a Blizzard tester. He had to do the same quest 50 times just to check for bugs. And there were 3 or 4 people doing it.

think about the people who are naturals at creating this kind of stuff they do this night and day I have watched interviews from the group who created halo three - reach they didn't think it was that hard. back to the blizzard maybe they were just a group of iliderates. also they have professional testers who do this stuff there are many occupations in this industry.

The problem is there is no "naturals" and people who make games know how to program and %90 of them have a degree that was equivalent to a bachelor of computer science. Also I've never seen anyone say making a triple A games was easy.

No they do that constantly, I've had play-test sessions that were pretty brutal as what he mentioned people doing at blizzard.

well oboviously it will be brutal. pumping gas can be brutal does that really matter what theese people are doing is hard stuff. but seriously what do you expext lift to be handed to you? as easy as pie? of course not life is not like that im pretty sure anyone in the industry can tell you that but think about it there has to be some good part do you think the just code all day it probobly works like this.:code play code code talk break change write write write break go home this is probobly what happens in theyre average day.

making video games seems great to me i have always wanted it as a line of work because it is something i would enjoy. I dont really care how short the deadlines were as long as the game im working on has violence and is something i myself would play. I understand that it would be mostly coding but it would be the greatest thing ever seeing my masterpiece at the end.

In your original post and comments you did not hold this attitude so no I don't think it's obvious.

Except I don't get paid in cash, I get old games from their store. So 18 hours for $60 of games is pretty brutal. When you can get $10 minimum wage and make $180 cash. Again the points you're making now is completely different from what the thread started out I didn't think or ever say it was easy, I said the opposite so don't insult me by trying to use my own comments against me and switching your opinion and acting like nothing happened. I don't think you can just say "code" without actually having done coding under pressure. Also when gameplay is set in stone the game is code code debug debug debug code debug debug code debug code code. I've talked to game designers during crunch period and they look like they've been put in a washing machine for a week straight.

Sadly you have to be pretty lucky to get into a studio that is making a game that exactly to your taste. Also at the end of the development cycle trust me you don't even want to play the game anymore because you've been running through that enough to have put enough hours in to have literally played it even in it's incomplete not fun build.

The motivation I see now is making something other people like, making a good IP and not having EA cut your studio off for not making games that will make enough money even if the game and studio are fantastic.

I am very sorry if I offended you but wait a sec are you a teenager? if so you probobly live with parents thus making it less brutal then again if you are over 21 i am sorry if I offended you. Your opinion does matter but still there has to be a fun part rather joking or playing. Either way it has to be fun sometimes otherwise they should be hard

No 20 is pretty much an adult and I pay my own rent, food, clothes and three years of university.

I know it sounds cool but it's still a job, best you can hope from a job is that it isn't boring and it is somewhat tolerable and enjoyable.

I don't actually work at EA I just play-test their games (don't ask me details I'm under a NDA and EA's lawyers are scary).

It depends just don't go into thinking you will get a fantasy job because statistically you won't get it. Just do your best in whatever fashion you can and try to make the best out it. Your guaranteed to improve your position if you do.

If I was the coder, I would puke, since I took a couple of years of coding and I dislike it. Don't ask what made me take it up. If I was the tester, it would pretty much get boring for me, since I can't keep to the monotonous job of playing games I don't fancy. I won't mind designing the concept art or storylines, since some of my interests lie in that area. That being said, I'm just not suited to stay at a video game company due to lack of dedication and interest.

I admire the guys in the studio, churning out a game that people finish in a few hour and then complain about how short it is. Takes dedication.
