Hello, I, am here to talk about one thing.

Dwarf Fortress

Have you played it? I guess not. Maybe you have, maybe you haven't. Most have not.

Dwarf Fortress, as the name suggests, is about dwarves and fortresses. It's also known as the game with the steepest learning curve ever. You end up know less when you play more. Using ACII graphics (%,^,>,D,Q,@, ect.) it has not the great of graphics.

The game is free and you can get it at [url=http://bay12games.com/dwarves]

I've heard of this game and I believe my brother has played it sometime in the past. It is supposed to be a highly-extensive and detailed game with many different rules/outcomes/horizons, etc, right? It sounds like a game I could get into.

This is one of my favorite descriptions of Dwarf Fortress' learning curve;

Not to scare anyone off but, "âThe processing power that Dwarf Fortress uses is on the same scale as modern engineering software for designing aerospace hardware,â says Ames, the engineer. âYou have more complicated simulations in Dwarf Fortress than when you model the aerodynamics of a wing.â" From this agewanted=all">article.

Anyways, I really enjoy Dwarf Fortress, even though I am horrible at it. I'm starting to the hang of most aspects of the game, but I still fail at the military part.

Read some of the article, sounds pretty darn awesome, might try it. Question though, does your computer have to be very good to run it? Because my computer is a 2007 craputer with a terrible video card and has a mediocore processor.

Being that it has ASCII graphics it doesn't really require much of a video card. It does require more and more processing power as time passes, but there are settings you can change so that you can play longer. I've never gotten a fort to last very long, but I've never seen it slow down with my i7-860 @ 2.8GHz.

Just to add more visual representation, here's the game without any custom tilesets:

Not that the graphics make it bad, but they certainly add to the non-accesible nature of it (haven't really played it myself because of the uber complexity :S).

If you're interested, I'd suggest giving this a read. I got through it just fine, but general knowledge of the game probably helps. Either way, there's an introduction for those unfamiliar with it.

Random Fact-of-the-day: Dwarf Fortress was one of the big inspirations for Minecraft's gameplay.

Glad that I am slowly recruiting people to the game. I enjoy the game, but I havn't played for a while. Might get back into it.
