Hello all. Your Friendly Neighborhood Satanist is taking a break from making MacBeth videos, making the "Best of 2011" thread, and generally being total Satanic Awesome with this thread. I've noticed a few things about certain game franchises that I find noteworthy and well, "threadworthy". Your mileage may vary, but your voice still carries weight, so feel free to argue with me. I'll just sic my attack dog on you. ^_^
Assassin's Creed
The recently necro'd "Assassin's Creed: Revelations" thread is the inspiration for this thread, and it's the franchise I feel most enthralled to discuss. I remember when my brother came home with the first Assassin's Creed, it was so pretty looking on our new 360 and I craved to play it. Well, in February of 2009, I got my hands on it. It was slow, repetitive, incredibly innovative, and just plain boring at times, but a good show at what a sequel could bring to the table. Assassin's Creed II came out later in the year and proved what the series could really be about, and passed all tests with flying colors. The next year, ***-***-Creed Bro-Hood came out and took GameInformer's Reader Game of the Year, which I found surprising. Sure, AC:B was a fine game and a worthy addition to my growing library, but it just seemed too much like a new coat of paint than a true construction job feel that ACII had going for it.
With ACR, I feel the series has hit a low, and I fear for the, highly probable, "Assassin's Creed III" to be released this year. How do I know it's going to be released this year? Because Ubisoft announced shortly after ACII's release that there would be a new AC every year. Look, this series could have been the next Elder Scrolls, a total reworking of mechanics, aesthetics, totally new locations and vistas, and new characters to play around with while still keeping the overhanging "future-but-now-modern" plot around. While Ezio's journey from boy to Master Assassin to Elder Assassin has been quite fun, I always thought Assassin's Creed would change it up every time around, finding different time periods of history and locations to keep the series fresh. This stagnation of character and plot is highly reminiscent of another high-profile franchise...
Call of Duty
Look. You know me. I appreciate Call of Dutys 1,2,4, 6's Spec Ops, and 8's Survival, but everything else about the series screams what is wrong with many modern games. The Call of Duty franchise is the epitome of lazy design, using an engine from 2005 (apparently it's a "Porsche" isn't necessarily bad, but it shows that the developers and publishers know that their game will sell no matter what, so they're trying to get away with doing as little work as possible to make the biggest green numbers as possible. And guess what? They're succeeding. Not just this franchise, but AC as well. Hell, I've got my own little thing with Halo coming up soon. I thought we learned our lesson from Homefront, Gaming Community! If the influence of Call of Duty and Assassin's Creed really spreads, then it will be, in essence, the death of games. You'll get your yearly FPS, Soccer game, Football game, RPG, and it will be bland and boring and you'll get it just because "I just kinda do". No. Call of Duty, as of now, stands for everything that's wrong with game, and save a few glimmers of hope, should have every Gamer pushing against its mountain of success built on stagnation and consumer ignorance.
Fallout
A small one here. I only played Fallout 3, but apparently the older ones were really really good. My only thing about this franchise is a suggestion, PUT IT IN EUROPE. I'm quite interested to see how things played out "Over There" and I don't think the Fallout Universe has explored that part of its own lore in too much detail yet. Granted, half of the charm of Fallout games is the pure neo-50's-esque uber-patriotism demi-propaganda, but it would be a good change of pace.
Halo
I love Halo. It was one of my first video games (after "Jak and Daxter" and "Ratchet and Clank" and has always had a place in my heart for its continuing innovation and wonderful story. This is also just a quick bit, but I feel as if Halo 4 should have been released a year from now. I just feel as if the market's been a bit Halo saturated. Ever since 2009 there has been a Halo title released, that's four years and five games! Granted, one was an RTS spin-off, one was an anniversary remake, one was a huge expansion pack, and one was a prequel and not at all connected to the main story, but still! Halo has always had three years between each of their core games (01, 04, 07, 10) and this over saturation is a bit scary. Will I be excited for Halo 4? Yes. Will it leave me slightly frightened at the future of Halo? Yes.
Sonic
Sonic Generations was great fun and all but we really should just sit on Sonic for a while. Just keep him away and out of public eye for a while, then put him on secret development so that six years from now he rocks the world with a brand new game on next-gen technology that blows our minds and reinvigorates a whole new chapter in the hedgehog's life. Sonic's a great character and his gameplay is fun, but more care really needs to be put into his development, and the Game Industry's tongue is still quite marred with the taste of Sonic Unleashed, so it would probably be best for Sonic to just, you know, take a breather.
Valve
needs to stop holding us by the ***** already and just give us SOME information on Half Life 3/Ep 3.
Homefront
A bright future I see in this one's future. Sure, the original sucked this year and nearly sent the FPS into a state of pure stagnation and was only defeated by the mighty Crysis 2, but a sequel is on the way and guess who's developing it now that the original developers are null and void? Crytek, the developers of the original's biggest "competition", Crysis 2. With a fantastic developer at the reigns powered by the second best engine in games, there's a lot to be said for the up-and-coming Homefront 2.
Mass Effect
Same thing as Sonic, but not because it's bad. Mass Effect is one of the greatest game series ever, and should be handled with a degree of respect. After ME3 and all its DLC, the franchise should lie low so Bioware can focus on Dragon Age and SWTOR. This will make the re-emergence have a much more Massive Effect when it finally returns *teh puns*.
Duke Nukem
Sure, DN:F sucked, but Gearbox only handled a meager fraction of the game and barely saved it from being unprofitable. With Randy Pitchford leading the way towards a new Duke Nukem game developed SOLELY by Gearbox, the geniuses behind Borderlands, we should all have a reason to Hail to the King.
Indie Games
To Q.U.B.E. - Copying off of Portal got old about four years ago To Bastion - Do I smell a side-quel? To Minecraft - Will the villagers ever have a purpose? To From Dust - Seriously, I want a sequel from YOU. To Angry Birds - Stop copying off of a flash game. You're becoming the Call of Duty of the iPad. That's like, the nexus of evil.
And I think that's it. Sorry to those who wanted words of wisdom and suggestions passed on to them from the mighty ChillzMaster, but now I must retire.
Hello, Friendly Neighborhood Sadist... Just for fun about franchise... Russian webcomic:
Preliminary translation: 1. Hey, good news! 2. I heard that you wanted sequel for Plants vs Zombies? 3. Electronic Arts bought Popcap. With their greed you will have new PvZ every year.
3. Electronic Arts bought Popcap. With their greed you will have new PvZ every year.
But that's not the EA style. That's the Activision style, a new game every year. EA has their schtick with the Online Pass nonsense, but whatever, capitalism, they can do what they want because it's their product. I want you to name any two EA games in any of their franchises (not including their EA Sports games) that have come out in consecutive years. (Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3 is the only one I can think of, but considering when during the year they were released, it was much closer to a two-year difference)
I partially agree with your AC post, except I enjoyed the first one until the end. And they are planning to let Desmond's story end before the so-called end of the world, 21 December 2012.
And if you don't count NFS to sport games sice they weren't made by EA Sports I believe, they have come out from 2002 - 2011 non-stop.
And I miss one franchise which is MoH. It is pretty old and they are planning in releasing another one this year. I hope it is better than MoH 2010.
that has been the EA style since 1995 till 2008 somewhere.
at 1 time SSX became so populair that the last few came out each year. i hope they are not gonna do that again whit this new SSX serie

i hope they are not going on the cod and bf way. we have enoufg of those games already. what we need is a fast fiction shooter not more slow realistic shooters
MW3 used the "MW3 engine" (that's the name of the engine).
Also, in case you didn't realize, the point of a game engine is so you can develop multiple games with it, so calling a company bad for using an engine more than once is bull****. Valve has been actually using source engine since 2004, why aren't you annoyed at them?
Yo! Well I find your idea of a new Fallout in Europe awesome! Since I live in Germany and have been to quite a lot of places in Europe it would be awesome to see a "Fallou: Europe". As long as it is as motivating and fun to play as Fallout 3 I would be happy. Concerning MW3: I was quite disappointed by what I saw. Graphically it did not really improve, which is however the least of my concerns. But it's the same old stoty except for it being all over Europe too... And the Multiplayer of BF 3 is way better anyways, it's just much more fun to play in my opinion. More possibilities, bigger maps, vehicles, squads etc. Oh and btw I love the new Zelda

Uhm. First CoD went the MoH way since they released games from 2002 to 2007 at least non-stop, couldn't look up exactly cuz if wiki.
And BTF is the slow realistic shooter and CoD the fast Arcade shooter.
Uhm. First CoD went the MoH way since they released
true but you can't realy compare old ww2 MoH games whit todays modern war cod games.
CoD the fast Arcade shooter.
CoD aint fast gameplay. THIS is fast gameplay. for this you actualy need skill to get above most people. in CoD you only need perks and other help things provided by the game. every "noob" can be pro in CoD.

Uhm, I don't get you, CoD is a ww2 game and a modern day game just like MoH, they are look-alikes. It are both ww2 games which advanced in time. Only MoH's time of releasing every year is finished, whilst CoD is in the middle of it.

Cod is a fast-paced Arcade shooter, that's just how most people treat and rate it. It isn't as fast as the video but that it is still a fast-paced arcade unlike Battlefield which is a more slow, realistic game.

let's put it this way then. when your used to play shooters like the video i posted. cod is SUPER easy. and i don't mean the single player, that is easy for every1 i guess. and being so easy takes out the fun of getting realy skilled in the game. some people cry about how fast scoping is cheating because it is impossible they say. while i could do it after just a few hours of gaming and tweaking my settings for optimal gameplay.
and i find it just unfair of the game itself to give people an advantage over other people. it makes that people that couldn't kill me normaly. now can kill me because of some perk.
conclusion: slow, unfair & easy.
there are 3 series like that while there are 0 games made in the fast style for almost 8 year. (not including serious sam. but he isn't online) it makes me unhappy =(
Uhm, I don't get you
it's hard for me to compare a 2004(last old MoH, not the 2010)(havn't played that 1 yet.) game and a 2008 (last CoD in ww2) game because of 2 reasons. the next gen consoles in 2005 and 2006. the setting of the games. 1 in europe, 1 in asia.
