That's not entirely true KhaoticSniper... I've heard of many teens here in the Netherlands that listen to a variety of music... Rap/Hip-Hop, Classical Music, Country (really? Yes!) and also Rock and Metal!
So it's merely who you meet and talk to that makes for an idea about what they listen to! Guess you simply need to trigger some conversations to find out there!
Can't say I'm a big fan of your teacher there Nichodemus... I'm living in a part of the Netherlands that has a rich and colourful history of folk dance and music, so... I grew up without knowing any better! Those who have had the priviledge (as I see it) to grow up with it will surely agree with me! Heheh... =P
As for Rock music... that's something most people get in touch with over time and the guitar part of it is something destinctive that decides whether you like it or not IMHO... =)
To bad I don't live in the Netherlands. If I mention some band they're just like "huh, whats that?" Very frustrating About only two or three teens I know like and listen to rock
I remember back in 2005 everyone in my was in to ROCK, Now most of my friends and even my cousins and relatives they all like POP better.
I remember when MTV use to just play MCR, Green Day, Blink 182, yea sure it had some Hip hop And Pop but Rock was always Playing majority of the time, Now Majority of the time playing is POP ( JB, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and so on)
What are we ROCK FANS gonna have to do to bring ROCK back to the Teens, 92% of teens these days listen to POP more than ROCK! If you are in the 8% Brainstorm Ideas on how we could bring back ROCK!
I do like some pop, though. There are some indie pop bands that I like (if that counts), and I listen to a bit of J-pop/K-pop. (Asians do have better pop than Americans, imo :P)
No **** Sherlock we do. The lyrics are still as horrid though.
So jeol... basically what you state here is that POP either comes from Asia or America, nothing else? What about Europe?! Can't wipe them off the table you know... England, Germany, The Netherlands, France, Spain, etc. have numerous artists with a legacy in POP music! And if you want to have examples, well... let's just say one name is sufficient to proove my point, behold: MADONNA! 'nuff said...
As for bringing back Rock music... that all depends on whether enough bands rise up and make that particular strain of Rock music that would appeal to the current generation... have one band become popular and the fire to the cannon is lit! All you have to do is aim... =)
I'm sorry, but what are we talking about here when we're discussing "indie"? Ol' Wiki states that word "indie" is any branch of music that retains outsider and underground values. Into more detail, "underground" defines music that operates outside mainstream value. So how does this apply to Mumford and Sons? They are a very popular band, won grammies and nominations for Sigh No More and Little Lion Man. Some underground music elements slowly evolve into popular, mainstream types and while Mumford and Sons's music is different from what is popular, the band itself *is*. Just thought I'd clean up a bit.
I remember when MTV use to just play MCR, Green Day, Blink 182, yea sure it had some Hip hop And Pop but Rock was always Playing majority of the time, Now Majority of the time playing is POP ( JB, Rihanna, Lady Gaga and so on)
Which are just plain terrible bands and artists for all three genres in my opinion. Their transitional Form is all too predictable with cliche lyrics about sex, women, boys, emotional hardship, and depression. But this is okay in the financial point of view. It is easier for the common masses to take a liking for a particular song piece if said song has plenty of repetition and reusable Form as well as lyrics they agree with or of understanding the concept. The repetition can be so catchy that it actually creates a psychological high for the listener, much less towards music with complex melodies and harmonies with multiple instruments.
So bottom line, mainstream Pop and Rap is simple, fun to listen and dance to, and catchy, whereas mainstream American Rock is...not so much. Swedish Metal on the other hand just kicks so much *** that it dominates the neighboring countries of that major genre. Record companies would rather keep the influence sectional, so this is why we hear so very little of foreign music -- because its foreign and therefore unknown and unrecognizable to the masses.
@Freakenstein I know it's confusing, but the 'indie' in indie folk doesn't really refer to being underground. I suppose alternative could replace the word indie, but the genre (including Mumford and Sons) is indie folk. And what is indie folk? Well it's heavily influenced by folk (duh), rock, and country. Usually has lots of harmony too.
As for why 'kids' are losing interest in Rock; well to put plainly, most mainstream rock sucks (sorry). Not many people are going to actively look for the good stuff because of that.
