Here's a cool topic for anybody with knowledge about modern metal. I've been recently getting into a lot of the newer technical metal bands, like Born of Osiris and Periphery, so I just wanted to bring up this topic here and see what you people have to say about it. Now, what I call a modern/new metal band is any metal band that released their debut album/EP after 2000, even though there are some exceptions. Anyways, here's a list of my favorite modern metal bands:
1. Protest The Hero: Genre- Progressive Metalcore Year Of Creation- 1999 Debut Release- A Calculated Use Of Sound *2003*
2. Whitechapel: Genre- Deathcore Year Of Creation- 2006 Debut Release- The Somatic Defilement *2007*
3. Between The Buried And Me Genre- Progressive Space-Death Metal Year Of Creation- 2000 Debut Release- Self-Titled LP *2002*
4. Skeletonwitch Genre- Extreme Metal Year Of Creation- 2003 Debut Release- At One With Shadow *2004*
5. Toxic Holocaust Genre- Blackened Thrash Metal Year Of Creation- 1999 Debut Release- Evil Never Dies *2003*
That's all I've got! Don't be afraid to post your favs; I'm not going to get angry if you post "softcore" bands or whatever.
As Nintendodo said, this is debatable. Music is an art form, to the viewer who is seeing, hearing, or tasting it, so technically I could say that dubstep is heavy metal because I could view it as such
Other bands I listen to that you guys might count as "heavy" since I get slammed on whatever bands I listen to... are: Sepultura, Overkill, The Scourger, and Devildriver. Again, these bands may have debuted before 2000 but since none of my other bands count these ones do

This demonstrates an utter lack of understanding of genres and subjectivity.
My favorite modern metal bands . . . Agalloch, Cynic, Diablo Swing Orchestra, and Orphaned Land, I'd say.
I can't favour the current sub-genres of Heavy Metal that are starting to evolve, or have already formed during the last decade or so... they don't have a sound I like and even after trying hard to do so, I still like the 'old' Heavy Metal sound best! =)
And about the fact that Wolfmother is being declared as a 'new-style Metal band' is pretty disturbing for me, as I really put that band under the Rock genre and not Heavy Metal... true, they have the influences of the older bands that formed the whole Metal genre to start with, like Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin, but they sound more Rock than Metal to me!
So, to conclude... the new Metal sub-genres are not all that great is my opinion. It's actually more of the same pie over and over, without a new recipe to try out. =/

There is no need to attack me because I have different opinions than you, so be nice ;P

I somewhat agree with you, although I am starting to get into the more modern "metal" it does all sound a bit the same.
Other modern bands I have recently found that I like are TYR, Alcest, Animals as Leaders, Death, Scale the Summit, and Miss May I

he wasnt attacking you, he was merely pointing out some flaws in your logic.

this is understandable. people are always going to like the stuff they grew up around, and that they listend to in their youth. this is why i like the bands that i do.
Only one that pops into my brain as one of my favorites of the modern era is Bloodbath. Death metal is about as heavy as you can get (in my opinion), and they're one of the best around. Favorite songs are Furnace Funeral, Ominous Bloodvomit, Wretched Human Mirror, and Year of the Cadaver Race. I prefer Akerfeldt's vocals over Tagtgren, but that's probably just because I'm an Opeth fan.
Doom, while heavy, just isn't the same kind of heavy. Doom is like a viscous soup, slowly churning, while death is like a uranium tipped bunker buster. Smashing, driving, explosive, and just **** powerful.
another couple bands i have been listening a lot to lately are veil of maya, and every time i die. i highly reccomend every time i die if you are a fan of mathcore
