I believe that the navy is more elite than the army because of navy seals and also my dad was in the nave during Vietnam war.

............. just because your father was in the navy doesnt make it better. it kind of sounds like a very childish reason (which i hear everytime i hear children talking about whats better).

also, isnt the navy PART of the army? i was never interested so idk but if it does isnt it obvious the army has more power...? :S

I agree with joshuabaillargeon about the navy seal thing. They are like the most top fighting force in the world. But the army also has elite forces, like the rangers, delta force, and green berets. But I'd rather join the army.

But the marines is more elite than the army. But is the marines a branch of the US armed forces?

Navy SEALs are a very small part of the Navy. Most of the military branches have their own extreme fighting forces that are very small parts of the overall force.

That said, the Navy has very few actual combat units. Combat crewmen, SEALs, and Naval pilots flying the F/A-18 are about it. Compared with the Army, which is almost entirely made up of possible fighting men and women. That's your answer.

One sits on a boat, the other sits on a landmine.

And then you have the Marines, the combat part of the Navy, though not part of the Navy (though it draws most of its already pathetic funding from the Navy).

Marines are better than both, only because every Marine is specifically trained for combat and combat only. Remember, regardless of MOS, every Marine is a rifleman before he or she is anything.

also, isnt the navy PART of the army?

....

Army
Navy
Marine Corps
Air Force
Coast Guard

That's the branches of the US military.

No, they're completely seperate branches. The Marines used to be a branch of the Navy, but now they're seperate. They'll still coordinate joint operations and such, but they aren't the same branch. The Navy Seals used to accept applicants from the Marines and Coast Guard, but not anymore.

But is the marines a branch of the US armed forces?

Yes. Marines are similar to the army, but are usually sent on amphibious operations near waterways, such as storming a beach. The army usually conducts land operations, such as in deserts. The navy usually stays on boats, such as combatting pirates in the ocean or providing transport for marines.

Yes, the navy and the army are not the same branch.

But these branches are similar-

Army/Air Force
Marines/Navy

Cost Guard- well I don't know. They're not really a fighting force. They do mostly sea rescue missions.

I think that the marines are more elite than the army, though the army is probably the main US fighting force.

I don't really get why the Navy has fighter jets. I thought they were a ship thing. I thought fighter jets were for the air force. Also, the Marines has fighter jets too. Weird huh?

They're like the water version of the National Guard.

The Marine Corps is a part of the navy

For political purposes, generally yes. But as a military structure, they define as seperate branches. The navy controls the ship while the marines are passengers.

In my opinion, Navy(along with naval air force) are more useful in controlling other countries while Arny is useful in defending.

Yes. Then 1798 happened.

What the heck are you guys talking about? Navy is more offensive and Army is more defensive? Who do you think is running all the bases over in Afghanistan? I don't think it's mostly the Navy...

And the National Guard isn't a branch. It is a section of other branches. There is an Air National Guard and Army National Guard. Coast guard is another branch of the military.

And yeah, Marines like to think they are better than Soldiers, because their basic training is longer and they have less people

I have to go with the Army. SF, Delta Force, Airborne Rangers I guess I am biased though, being in the Army and all

Depends on the position you have. A deep sea diver is definitely more challenging than being a medic, whilst a Ranger would be harsher than a naval gunner.

So yes, apart from stroking your various male egos and generalizing, what are we supposed to do?

They're a separate branch of the Armed Forces from the army and navy, but come under the United States Department of the Navy.
