This is the place to post who you think was(is) the best leader of his/her country. Back up your claim with facts and argue why your choice is better then everyone else's choice.

I think that the best leader was James K. Polk. He was the best president in US history to me. He only served 1 term and what able to accomplish all the goals he set for himself. He was able to get California added to the Union, he got the Oregon Territory from Great Britain without war, he lowered the tariffs, and he made a national treasury.

that sure is impresive. is the growth rate still going on or has it been lowered by the crisis aswell?

I think we still had a growth of 8% in 2009, but that was a freak anomaly. The growth has slowed to about 2.5% now, which...isn't too shabby I guess.

Alexander the great. He took over the known world using only Macedonia, rising into legend. Macedonia was not exactly doing great, but then it was changed into the ruler of the world until he died.

The world has always seen conquerors of such stature, but many of them fail to consolidate them into solid states. Alexander never managed that, spending all his time warring, and not governing. Which isn't a hallmark of good leadership.

He didn't "govern" his empire but instead enriched it. He built libraries, schools, and hospitals all across middle Europe. Where do you think we got the idea of free education? He was the first to impose this on his people, and it worked well. Unfortunately, he wasn't able to govern his massive burden, so his empire collapsed. I believe he helped Greece build upon their legendary education principles.

We do suck at producing many goods though. We're only good at finance, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. Along those lines.

Link.

I'm British and I think J.F.K was a great leader of The United States.

Yeah I agree with ScouseWarrior, JFK was a very good leader, Obama hasn't done a lot to brag about other than becoming the first African American president.

JFK was a rather horrible President. Bay of Pigs was a failure. Getting deeper into Vietnam was a mistake. The Cuban Missile Crisis was not a ''victory'', he stumbled into it because he projected a weak image, plus he was forced to publicly announce that the Americans would never invade Cuba. Diem was killed on his watch, one of the worse blunders in Vietnam.

Leader of a Country must be a president.
The best president of Latvia has been a president for 8 years.
Her name is Vaire VÄ«Ä·e Freiberga can't discover an englesh translation for her name.
Currently we have a horrible president. Latvians are starting to go to other countries because there they can live a lot better. In the news they showed how is the life of latvians in England. There was a guy with no job, no house and no money. But he said: "I rather be poor then go back in Latvia." The guy was latvian. Other latvians don't have enough money to get out of this country. The ones who can't live in fear because they can be fired any time. That way I am afraid about my mom. (my dad is in Norway) We will need another president who can lead the country, but now we don't have lots of money and we need more. The ones who want to be presidents think excactly the same way: "Once I'll lead this country I'll finally have a big house with a big balcony and a garage with ferrari in it." That is how every president thinks, they just don't care about the country, but themselves. We have to pay 65Ls (1 Ls is 2$) for my school every month. It's like 130$ for every month you go in school. F***ing lame. Does anyone else have a situation like this in your country?

It doesn't always have to be a president, there have been some very good prime ministers in the past.

Highly untrue. There have been amazing leaders in the past: monarchs and dictators have also proved to be very well-knowledgable in the field of leadership. Monarchs and dictators are often discredited because so many of them have failed to lead. Stalin increased Russia economy greatly, Hitler succesfully restored Germany to a world power in the interwar years, and Queen Elizabeth was able to hold off the Spanish Armada. Unfortunately, we have also had some dictators that created nothing but problems. Maxmilian Robespierre created the "Reign of Terror" to "attempt to revolutionize France." It ended up creating nothing BUT terror, where the guillotine was used to completely destroy society and all its laws. Luckily, Napolean Bonaparte rose to power in the chaos and fix France.

Napoleon plunged France into one long continuous bloody warfare, conscription and taxation. Killed off millions.

No he didn't. He reclaimed the land that has ever been lost by France by attacking other nations. The only men lost were the ones in his military, and that was very few. However, he did tax heavily, but returned the offer by stabilizing the economy. He was a great, strong leader until he attacked Russia. Unfortunately, they lost that battle and Napolean was sent to prison for some reason or another. He was one of France's best leaders until his final few years, but it wasn't enough to undo the great service he did to France.
