This is the place to post who you think was(is) the best leader of his/her country. Back up your claim with facts and argue why your choice is better then everyone else's choice.

I think that the best leader was James K. Polk. He was the best president in US history to me. He only served 1 term and what able to accomplish all the goals he set for himself. He was able to get California added to the Union, he got the Oregon Territory from Great Britain without war, he lowered the tariffs, and he made a national treasury.

No he didn't. He reclaimed the land that has ever been lost by France by attacking other nations. The only men lost were the ones in his military, and that was very few. However, he did tax heavily, but returned the offer by stabilizing the economy. He was a great, strong leader until he attacked Russia. Unfortunately, they lost that battle and Napolean was sent to prison for some reason or another. He was one of France's best leaders until his final few years, but it wasn't enough to undo the great service he did to France.

Napoleon lost 400,000 men in the 1812 Russian Campaign alone. That's not counting the maimed/sick/disabled in that particular campaign. He was only at peace for a year in 1802, after the Treaty of Amiens.

Furthermore, I don't think France ever controlled Spain, much of Italy, Austria-Hungary, much of Germany, Russia, Poland. To claim that all he did was to ''reclaim land'' shows quite poor historical knowledge.

He certainly left the law books in better shape, not to mention its infrastructure, but by calling up year after year of conscripts, until 16 year olds were fighting on the frontlines, just to hold much of Europe, seething at the points of French bayonets, is not the stuff of great leader. He virtually bankrupted the National Bank of France, leaving it with just a few million francs just before his Austerlitz Campaign.

Just because he was a military genius, does not make him a good national leader.

France however could have had a right to England as the Normans were French and the Normans conquered England in 1066.

Apart from the Normans vanishing as a political force by Napoleon's Age, claiming bits of land 600 years after you ''lost'' them is absurd. Nor were the Normans French; in fact they hated the French, and had a penchant for raiding into Royal France.
