I think it's a worthy feature, but not a necessary one. It personalizes the experience more, sigs are often quirky and reflective of the person, and they get rid of Forum uniformity. I don't think vulgarity or non PG material will be a big problem; only people who post would have sigs, and since there aren't many of us, not to mention users who actively report discrepancies in behavior, it's easily solvable. It's not like the avatar problem with millions of users.

Signatures will probably help people identify others, especially if they are not just plain text.

p.s. photo's stand out more than text, which is why some people are probably identified by the armatar they use (chillzmaster for example)

I don't happen to like the idea. I've been on forums that allowed sigs, and what ends up happening is that the entire forum gets clogged up with images, and then each page ends up being three times as long, making it much more difficult to read through threads. As has been mentioned, your username and armatar already appear next to your post. What good is a signature if all it does is take up space in your post?

unless you have a unique armatar or it is seasonal, then you can not identify with that, and as I said, text doesn't stand out as well as images.

You could always create an option to turn off sigs. I go to a forum that does that, so if you'd rather not have sigs, you can just turn them off, and those that want sigs can have them.

In solving the problem if there is too much in the sig (and if it were a picture, where regulating the amount of text in it wouldn't help), they could always make it so that if the signature exceeds something like 120 pixels in height a scrollbar would appear and instead of the entire sig taking up the page only part of it would (and you could scroll to see the rest). That would also solve the problem if someone tries to put an image that is a few thousand pixels long just to cause users to have to scroll down a while just to see if anyone posted below them.

Sometimes it gets annoying to read a forum when you see a page long sig...so it should be limited. Take for instance the Dead frontier forum, it was crazy trying to read stuff! Just a thought.

Have we really gotten that lazy? It's just scrolling.

It's just scrolling.

It's also annoying and completely unnecessary to have irrelevant images separating every post.

Wouldn't you get tired of scrolling and seeing this picture over and over again?

^ This is what the forums will look like with signatures. You can't tell me that you'd rather have it that way than just have no signature option.

Ironically enough, scrolling down through those pictures was the most fun I've had the last half-hour.

You can't tell me that you'd rather have it that way than just have no signature option.

Well, like I've said two times *cough*...

You could always have the signature have it's own scrollbar, sort of like how pictures more than 640 pixels wide have a scrollbar. If the signature is longer than, say, 120 pixels (about an inch in height) you have to scroll to see the rest of the signature, and then you won't have to scroll as much.

Or, like I said before, you could also implement a way to turn off signatures if you don't like them.
