B.B. King is not the best blues guitarist. He is arguably the best blues artist, and he has a very recognizable style of playing, but he is far from the best. My favorite is Derek Trucks. His guitar is just as recognizable as B.B. King, if not more, he fits the blues genre very well, and he can play super impressive licks without having to play at lightning speed. I would also mention Sonny Landreth because he has a lot more technical skill than Derek Trucks, and he does a **** ton of crazy **** on stage, but he doesn't fit the blues genre as well as Derek Trucks, and derek trucks puts so much soul in his playing, it's like he's crying out of his guitar.
the list isnt based on technical skill along though. its based on skill, lasting impact, respect from other musicians, innovativeness, stage presence, and overall influence. if it was on technical skill alone, buckethead would be at the top of the list in a heart beat
I was talking about blues guitarists, mainly the comparison between B.B. King and Derek Trucks... Buckethead does not play blues.
Based on your criteria, what makes BB king better than derek trucks. The only thing I can think of that BB King has over Derek trucks is stage presence.
Sorry but there is no best guitarist. Everyone approaches the instrument differently and everyone brings something different to the table. While you may prefer one guitarist over another, that doesn't mean one is necessarily better than the other - its all subjective.
i agree with metalwill. Not every guitarist plays it the same even if they all play same genre they all play it with different flavor and different attitude. On top of that there are so many guitarist out there most of them are unheard of for example Michael Gungor from "Gungor" is an awesome guitarist. He is like a john mayer but, he isnt better not because he isnt as good but, he approaches it differently.
dude, jimi Hendrix? he broke a barrier in guitar playing but, he is such a messy guitarist. also, i wanted to add being the best guitar player isn't only playing if not creation. I can look up songs on the internet but, doesn't make me a guitar player. I have to be able, to know how to play make song and solos in whihc case i think the Reggae, blues and sometimes rock but, with rock its a rare cse even though it sounds good it doesnt make it well crafted music

well T-bone walker would be right up there with them.

i disagree. there can be a best guitarist. it all depends on what criteria you are using. technically, guitarists can be better then eachother and they are. if you say they dont then by your logic, im just as good of a guitarist as BB king. i just have a "different approach". i dont even play guitar.
of course you cant judge someones guitar playing by the way they write stuff and "how" they play stuff, but you can judge there influence, there stage presence. you can judge there innovativeness, there technical skill, the respect they had from other musicians as well as their fans. it may be subjective but in the end, depending on ones criteria, there is a better guitarist then the rest

I didnt read his comment but, i think when he said prefer i think he meant that there is a border that would desperate many guitarist but, obviously when it comes to pros there isnt really a best guitarist but, there some guitarist better than others is just that its hard to compare because there are so many with different styles

i know. thats when you bring in certain criteria though that makes there style sort of "irrelevant". like influence, innovativeness, respect from other musicians, stage presence, and plain old technical skill. thats why guitarists like paco de lucia, djengo reinhardt, BB king, carlos santana, an chet atkins stand out.

I admit that list of people are great guitarist but, very different but, lets get style out of the criteria. Even though they are good there are much better guitarist the reason they stand out is more even though they do have great skills its because of innovation and stage presence v

please for my next post refer to the list on my profile page.
style itself isnt in the criteria, although pretty much every single guitarist on my list is of a different genre, that doesnt mean they have more aspects then the next.
not only did i use the criteria i stated above but i used also: influence not only on other players but on theyre particular genre/style of playing, (note it says INFLUENCE on style of playing, not the style itself.) impact, overall importance on shaping the guitar world, technique, creativity, VERSATILITY, musical depth and expression in both composing and performing, live energy and improv skills, and originality.
through all those criteria i have compiled the list on my page.

I guess with that criteria you could use that to define "best" guitarist because its very specific and has a lot of subjects but, obviously because we have so, many guitarist in the world it would have to be a a score larger than the regular 1-10/10 it would have to be 1-100/100.
there is a list taht has around 200 guitarists i believe. a very good list too. i think they used around the same criteria as me, if not they used even more criteria. this is it
