i personal dont believe it but many groups have predicted it ex: mayans, hopi indians, the bible St Malachy predicted the world will end with the 112th pope; pope bendict is our 111th pope. Why would all these people predict the same date?

the Mayans were the SMARTEST civilization known to man.

Yes when I think about intelligent civilizations the first thing I think of are ones who believed that the world was created from an act of necrophilism and who died in caves as viruses ravaged their people.

This is exactly why we shouldn't consider 2012 to be valid not why we should give it a second thought.

You know what is funny? When the Spanish came, some claimed the priests claimed they knew of there coming, and that they were gods. That made it easy to take over...

Weren't smart enough to prevent their own destruction?

They weren't remotely smart. Cave men invented the wheel. That's the smartest thing in history.

The Mayan calendar is an astronomical prediction calendar. Our modern Mayan calendar-esque techniques all rely on the same thing: Mathematics.

Guess what? Simple math equates the Mayan calendar. Give me a sequence of celestial phenomenon over 100 years and I swear to God, Earth, and the apocalypse that I could build a Mayan calendar.

It somewhat aggravates me. Ancients were not stupid, smart, or anything else. They had the same brains we do. They are no different.

Our modern math can predict when the freaking big bang happened, and when the universe will end (roughly). Our modern mathematicians are better than the Mayans, I'll tell you that.

The world will not end. Not now, not anytime until Apophys decides to swing by. Then we have a slight chance at the end. You have another 23 years to live your life before then, so get going.

We have no foreseeable threats until then.

Not now, not anytime until Apophys decides to swing by.

Yes but the probability of it hitting us is 2.7% (1/50)
Im not saying that is is 100% true that everything that I said in my last post is true, I'm saying that we should atleast put it in consideration.

I thought it was something about an asteroid passing Earth that they thought would hit Earth, asterologists ( thats what I think they're called) think that it will harmlessly pass Earth.

Actually, like I said in my last post, there is a slight chance that it will hit us (2.7%)

Y2K is the same thing as this 2012 stuff. Fear tactics for money. With Y2K they told everyone that if they didn't get a new computer, it'd go bezerk because they weren't programmed to go past 1999. With 2012, they're telling everyone to buy/build bunkers so that they wont blow up/melt/die from plague/turn into zombies/get shot/get abducted.
Or at least, that's what I believe.

EnterOrion, the wheel was invented in Mesopotamia and the people there were not cavemen. the asteroid thing will not happen because it would have to be such a huge one or hit a specific spot like a huge nuclear plant to do any damage to everybody.

On the contrary a large enough astroid hitting anywhere could cause us no end of grief.

Here's what it comes down to: there is no evidence to say the world IS going to end, and we can't be certain that it isn't going to end. And anybody(like me) who says they do believe in 2012 just gets told things like: are you stupid?, that's retarded!, people thought the world was going to end before and were wrong!, and other such things. Basically, this thread is just a giant waste of time.

Out of curiosity why do you believe?
