let me just clarify, Skills with fixed damages means like "Stab (5-8 damage, melee)" skills that don't do a fixed amount of damage just have a name and it does a different amount of damage each time and it would look like this "Stab (melee)" no skills you would just say how you attack with the weapon you have like if you have aa sword you would say "A run around him, jump and attempt to stab him in the head"

I prefer not exactly free roam, but a somewhat fixed setting/plot that the players could adapt too. Like a small map with all sorts of things to do, but with the same central goal.
Check Card Frontier and ATS, both are based in single areas but dont have a necessary 'goal'
And I like skills, but I dont like the turn-based system. It just doesnt work out, with the whole time-zone differences and all, where I could post what you do and go turn-by-turn, that would take seriously forever.
