Yes, but there is not a country in Europe called Europe. Unless America changes its name, I don't see a reason for everyone in North and South America to be called an American.
Besides, If they tried to change it so everyone in North or South America would be called an American, technically it could be changed to North and South Canada, because we're the biggest country in that area, and own the most land. Then everyone in the western half of the world would be called Canadians. But instead of doing that if this was about to go through, we'd probably just call ourselves our own continent.

I suppose it is because everyone calls themselves their countries name+ian, but since Americans can't call themselves United Statiers << lol, its Americans.

Well Americans, Mexicans, and Canadians are all North American. Thought most people refure to only one of the three at a time and rarely talk about North America as a whole.
