I think home-schooling is a good way to save your kid from the insanity and awkwardness of middle school. 6th-8th or 9th grade are tough times. You suddenly have to look your best, and then nature makes you look the worst you'll ever look in your life. Other than that, I would probably send my kids to public school. If they don't like it, they can deal with it.
Well, I was homeschooled starting in 10th grade, and I'm a Junior now. Based on my 9th grade experience, I prefer homeschooling. Even if my dad needs to go run an errand or something, I still have my dog to keep me company.
Im a freshman this year, and we are about 2 or 3 weeks in. I actully kinda like it for the most part, except for the occasional annoying guys that won't shut up, the fact i have biology first period (theres something you realy wanna wake up to), and that i have to stay after school monday, tuesday, and wednesday for 2 hours. I have alot of friends in some of my classes (sad thing is a few really close friends arn't)
I started 1st grade in Norway, then I went on to an American school in Paris. The American school is way better than the Norwegian one, so when I go back to Norway next year, I'll be three grades ahead of my current one! I'm not kidding!
People can complain about the school system being horrible in the USA, but with teachers getting paid so horribly i don't really blame the system for being horrendous. With movie stars and sports players getting paid mega-money, I don't fault the teachers (not saying anyone has) and I'm not shocked about how horrible the system is. When pay goes up for teachers and funding goes up for education, the system may get better.. But I'm not holding my breath.. and don't recommend you do either....
I went ahead and searched for it, this is the average teacher's salary..
Median annual earnings of kindergarten, elementary, middle, and secondary school teachers ranged from $43,580 to $48,690 in May 2006; the lowest 10 percent earned $28,590 to $33,070; the top 10 percent earned $67,490 to $76,100. Median earnings for preschool teachers were $22,680.
According to the American Federation of Teachers, beginning teachers with a bachelorâs degree earned an average of $31,753 in the 2004-05 school year. The estimated average salary of all public elementary and secondary school teachers in the 2004-05 school year was $47,602.

@GreatZulu- You are comparing completely different skill sets and expecting them to be the same, of course sports stars will be paid more, they bring in more revenue and there are very few of them. We don't need to fund schools more, it just feeds the fires of inefficiency. Many private schools can operate better on much less money per student.

I do find some degree of fault with them... because of the teachers' union agreements it becomes substantially harder to remove some teachers no matter how grossly incompetent they are. Some teachers who have been charged with sexual misconduct with their students, whom we trust them to educate, were not removed because of the extensive process required.

What? They entertain for a living. And I'm pretty sure that educating the youth of society is a priority to entertainment, last time I checked. Teachers go through this thing called college, and kind of need a way to pay off loans for it.
And what are you talking about, there aren't very many of them? I wish I could make a list of all the professional athletes that make more than teachers. Oh, wait, that's all of them, sorry.
@Zootsuit- I meant as a ratio between teachers and athletes, there are a vastly greater number of teachers, law of supply and demand, there are more of them so they are less valuable.
There is a large difference than entertaining and educating. Most teachers aren't very entertaining (except my seventh grade life science teacher and ninth grade wood shop teacher), so as such would merit less pay, being less entertaining. You would pay more to see Dane Cook than the local stand-up comedian with used jokes.
