Hey everyone.
I don't like school at all. How about you? What is your opinion about school?

Schools teach a lot more then that. Most people think school is just for knowledge. It is to help you become an adult. Better yet, it prepares you for the real world. You do get graded in the real world. The schools are nice compared to adult work.

You hit the nail right on the head, TotalReview! Everybody, listen to this guy and I! School isn't just about memorizing pointless information (except maybe social studies :P). School is for teaching social skills and developing a good work ethic (although, some seem to be born with none, apparently!). These will make you a better person in the long run, so all you whiners need to quit complaining and accept it...you'll be glad you did.

Also, like C is for Cookie said, without school you probably wouldn't even have a quarter of the friends you have now!

Meh, go to the park and you'll make plenty of friends.

Now don't tell me school has given social, working ethics, and all that crap.

You cannot be thought these things. Socials skills are DEVELOPED from talking to others. Work ethics come from a good personality. You cannot tell someone who to talk to someone and how to behave in a certain situation.

I have always hated school and always thought of my teachers as idiots. Aced my tests and doing just fine now. Its not that I'm smart enough to understand it without the teachers help. Its that unlike the others who think its boring and pointless, I try anyway.

So we all just magically know to be nice to others and respect one another? No, when you are a toddler, you are taught how to treat others. This is a building block to making you a more mature adult.

Now don't tell me school has given social, working ethics, and all that crap.

Where else do you get them from then? Your parents can teach you but usually they work so this is when you have school. How does school not teach you all those things? You have to remember that just because people learn these things, doesn't mean they want to use them.

If we all were just told to go talk to someone without any previous conversations, what do you think would happen? School puts all these kids together under a safe environment so they can learn how to interact. As they get older, they become more skilled in interacting. It all starts from when you are in Kindergarten or something similar.

I think it is dumb when kids say they hate their teachers. [sarcasm]Yeah, fuck them for trying to make me more knowledgeable![/sarcasm] Are there some teachers who could be better? Yes, same with every job. There are bad doctors, cops, firemen, garbage men, cooks, and a whole lot more. Taking it out on all the teachers or rather the school based on a few teachers is just a tad biased and unfair.

And WHERE can you go to talk to others? SCHOOL!!!!!!! Geez.

First off, I noticed that you made this statement without saying why you thought this. Also, school rewards you for hard work O_o...please explain how that doesn't teach work ethic. And, like you said, social skils are developed from talking to people, and you talk to people IN SCHOOL!!! Geez!

I don't think people in middle school realize this yet,but I have noticed in just my first year of high school that I have found quite a few things that the stuff I learned there were useful for.For one debates on the World politics section.Secondly I find tons of other things useful like electives where you can learn how code html.

60% of High schoolers drop out.

I am assuming you are only talking about your district right?

But yeah, my districts system is horrible. I have been wanting it to change so bad. I have even made a few petitions, but they do squat.

If this is directed at me, I will put some key elements school teaches you into becoming an adult.

Responsibility: If you are not responsible, you get bad grades. Most kids want to get good grades so they learn to be more responsible. When you break a school rule, you face the consequences. You don't play the "He/She did it" game. You don't just magically become more responsible.

Social Skills: Schools definitely teach you social skills but this is actually when you are very young. They do this so when you are older, it is easier to work in groups. The schools put you in a safe environment to interact with others. You learn how to talk to one another and not do anything harmful. Your parents can't just take you to a park and throw you at another kid to talk to.

Time Management: This is a very important skill you will need when you are older. Time is not easy to manage, especially when you are a kid. Schools force you to manage time so you can pass. The homework and projects teach you that sometimes you have to stop doing some things to get others done. When you are older, you can't just sit back and not go to work or not do anything at work. You have to manage your time to keep your job.

Knowledge Of course, schools teach you knowledge. You use it every single day. You may think most of the stuff you learn in school is pointless but it really isn't. Weird math problems are for a couple reasons. The main reason you may need it is because it opens your mind to complex problem solving. Taking each problem step by step to solve it. Hm, I wonder how you could use that in real life...

Okay Drace, there are many more but I am tired right now. If you still think schools are pointless, then please make an effort to change my mind. Saying, "tell me how school does any of these things you mention" is not going to make me see it from your point of view at all. You also have to remember that not all schools suck.

I know you learn a lot but why do you need to know most of the stuff you will never use again in your life.

Generally you don't even realize if you do use it which leads to the thinking that you never do. Are you going to have to know the Boltzmann constant if you don't pursue a career in physics? Probably not, but the point of those science classes wasn't just that but also to teach you a different method to approaching the world then just be told how things are and taking it at face value. Most of the things that you learn in school you don't realize you learn, and aren't exactly taught to you, however if you hadn't gone through the experience you probably never would have encountered those ideas you now take for granted.

The material you learn is not what you use. The way you learn the material or use the material is what you will use later in life. Every kid needs to get that through their head.
