There it is the big question. I mean the only females he's close to is Mrs. Puff and Sandy. And he would rather get a little to friendly with Patrick and Squidward.
zanderthaw, I am not going to answer that. In one episode, Spongebob hits on Squidward. It's the one where they sell krabby patties in the submarine. Don't call me a wuss for watching Spongebob, it's pretty funny actually, even if it can be childish.
So I'm not sure that this can even become intelligent conversation, but it should, and quickly, or will be locked....
I don't think he's homosexual. I doubt any sexuality was thought of when he was created. I think that being asexual, slightly, he is less intimidating to children. Just because he's close to Patrick doesn't mean anything, men can be close to their friends..

Now, Dr. Dobson said, SpongeBob's creators had enlisted him in a "ro-homosexual video," in which he appeared alongside children's television colleagues like Barney and Jimmy Neutron, among many others. Mr. Rodgers said he founded the We Are Family Foundation after the Sept. 11 attacks to create a music video to teach children about multiculturalism. The video has appeared on television networks, and nothing in it or its accompanying materials refers to sexual identity. The pledge, borrowed from the Southern Poverty Law Center, is not mentioned on the video and is available only on the group's Web site.
Mr. Rodgers suggested that Dr. Dobson and the American Family Association, the conservative Christian group that first sounded the alarm, might have been confused because of an unrelated Web site belonging to another group called "We Are Family," which supports gay youth. . . .
On Wednesday however, Paul Batura, assistant to Mr. Dobson at Focus on the Family, said the group stood by its accusation.
"We see the video as an insidious means by which the organization is manipulating and potentially brainwashing kids," he said. "It is a classic bait and switch."
This reminds me of a great T-shirt from 1999, when Jerry Falwell complained about Tinky Winky, one of the Teletubbies: "He is purple â" the gay-pride color; and his antenna is shaped like a triangle â" the gay-pride symbol." (I should say that this wasn't Falwell's invention; apparently Tinky Winky had become something of a gay icon over a year before Falwell made his claim, see for instance this quote from an English academic.) I saw the shirt in the window of a West Hollywood T-shirt store that catered to a gay clientele, and it said
When it was first made it wasn't supposed to be a kids show. The makers of SpongeBob originally made it for Comedy Central. The only thing is Comedy Central wasn't interested in it. The owners of Nickelodeon say it and decided they wanted it. However, it was to mature, so they contacted the makers and had them make it more child appropriate while still maintaining the original comedic ideas.

Cholokid, I didn't know that, it's pretty interesting. It seems similar to Ren and Stimpy, where it seems a bit too mature for kiddos, but Nickelodeon still picked it up.
Still, I think that handholding is a pretty big step from being homosexual. Maybe they're just trying to promote that males don't have to be these macho machines with no feelings, and can still care for their friends. Just because he doesn't have a love interest doesn't mean he's gay. And yes, I do watch way too much Spongebob!
Well, DragonMistress, if you watch SpongeBob a lot you would remember the empisode where Spongebob and Patrick use a submarine to sell Krabby Patties mobile. And as Spongebob was leaving he said goodbye to Squidward twice, one of which was flirty.
