I heard this rumour going round that there is a slight chance the wrold could nd next wednesday thanks to some scientists experimenting with a large hadron collider.

It is a staggering device, occupying a train-sized tunnel 18 miles long, buried 300ft underground, studded with gigantic, cathedral-sized ring-shaped detectors where collisions between packets of âheavyâ subatomic particles, âhadronsâ, will take place in the hope that the innermost workings of matter and energy will be revealed.

The LHC is, arguably, the most impressive machine ever built by Mankind

I got this info from this website

[url=http://www.zimbio.com/CERN+Hadron+Collider/articles/110/Large+Hadron+Collider+World+End+Next+Wednesday]

I have heard that the chance of this happening is one in 50 million.

According to the article on the website the earth will end in one of two ways. The first is a biblical style ending.Massive earthquake, Tsunamis and tornadoes followed by the end itslef.

The fabric of the planet itself would start to disappear, trillions of tonnes of rock, water, air and life sucked into a whirlpool of unimaginable force.

The other scenario is an instant death.

In an instant - about one-twentieth of a second - the entire Earth would simply vanish from space.

Less than two seconds later, the Moon would follow suit. Eight minutes later, the Sun would be ripped apart, followed by the rest of the planets in the solar system and onwards, a wave of destruction caused by a rent in the fabric of space itself, spreading out from our world at the speed of light.

Even though it is a one in 50 million chance. It is still not a chance i am willing to take. If we(man) can destroy the universe no matter how tiny the chance then surely this is knowledge we are better off noyt knowing. What do you think?

I am not saying that it will happen. the articles both say how it is extremely unlikely but that it is still possible. I am not blindly accepting that it is going to happen. I am acknoledging that there is a chance that it could after having read various sources. There is a distinct difference between that and blind faith.

Call scientists clever if you will, but there are other scientists who disagree you know...

I question these scientists...They thought the world was going to end many times...You and I are still here, ya know.

None of the scientists i have read about disagree that it is possible. They all say that it is just extremely unlikely.

Can u give any examples of this at all in recent years? especially scientists working at CERN.

If you bothered to read the entire thread. Yes all 4 pages of it you woud know that this is not a thread just debating if the world was going to end next wednesday but the fact that a large haldron collider is being switched on in Geneva and there is a one in 50 million chance that it could cause a black hole that could destroy the earth.

You're right, I can not think of anything at the moment. There have been rumors such as Y2k, June 6,2006(6/6/06), etc. What I really can't believe is why people want to look for the end of it all...

Y2k

That was the Russian KGB wrongly interpreting American war excercises as a threat of nuclear attack. This has absoloutely nothing to do with scientists.

June 6,2006(6/6/06)

This is just because the dat is 666 the devils number in the bible. Again it has nothing to do wtih scientists.

What I really can't believe is why people want to look for the end of it all...

The scientists in this case didnt set out to figure out how to destroy the world but to find out more about energy. This potential black hole creation is such a small chance it can be discounted however they have to mention it otherwise they would be negligent.

You did notice I said this right? I also said rumors
by the way.

Also, you are right about

they have to mention it otherwise they would be negligent.

Guess I really can't beat you here. I submit to you, but since I am a Christian, I just can't believe in it.

SCIENTISTS ARE ATHIEST!

The world is not going to end. God's not a jerk...most of the time.

Ya know, I find it kind of funny that scientists put so much effort into proving that the world is millions of year old and then turn around and try to tell us that it's going to end tomorrow.

God's not a jerk...most of the time.

I found that kind of funny at first, but God really is a jerk none of the time. +<

He isn't a jerk. If you would think about why he allowed things to go on, then you would have second thoughts. We can't simply assume he is doing this because he doesn't care about us.

I was joking. I guess Carlie's old saying was right:

Sarcasm jokes never carry well over the internet
