In the game show riddle the guy should switch because it would give him a 2/3 chance of winning, and here's why:
assume the car is in door #3 in all situations
you choose #1 he gets rid of #2 you switch to #3 - YOU WIN you choose #2 he gets rid of #1 you switch to #3 - YOU WIN You choose #3 he gets rid of door 1 or 2 you switch - YOU LOSE
It is, in fact, better to switch, as you would have a 2/3 chance of winning. Intuition says it would be 50/50, but mathematics says otherwise.
Its rather complicated. This is known as the Monty Hall problem, which you can do yourself here. See, the % of winners and losers isnt 50/50, its 2/3 and 1/3.
yeah good, people are starting to grasp the answer(my mom and I had a long fight about the answer, and she still doesn't believe me)

Three guys went to a motel and rented three different rooms. Each paid $10. Thats a sum of $30. So they went to their rooms. The motel clerk thought he overcharged them, so he gave the butler $5 to divide between the three of them. The butler did not know how to divide it so he put $2 in his pocket and gave each of them a dollar back. In their eyes, they paid $9 each. So: sum=30 3(# of men) x $9(amount paid by each) = $27(total) then you have that $27 + $2 (butler took) = $29
