Wht do we have religion? Because to me it seems that we only have religion to comfort you or the past. Religion also seems that it is supposed to heal sins. How do we know all of this without some proof? (I'm a christian) Like do we have any bones of adam and eve? I'm just trying to get answers to questions. Thank you!
Uh, this is an interesting thread. Ok, hears something from the top of my head:
1.We all need beliefs (yes, even Chuck Norris)to help prove that our existence is actually meaningful.
2.Think...think....OH YEAH, uh, religions help do this as religions are basically are system of beliefs.
3. Remeber, religions are started by one man's beliefs: The Buddha, Jesus, etcetera. These people sounded pretty smart, so other people put these belifs in books and shipped them away to be sold in many places. A modern day example of this is: Harry Potter, Jedi Knight. (Just trolling, trololol. Please ignore this point.)
Uh, ok, I'm dry of ideas. But yeah, religion is basically linked to beliefs, that's the main point I'm (or some other posters on this thread) are trying to get across.
1.We all need beliefs (yes, even Chuck Norris)to help prove that our existence is actually meaningful.
What do you mean by "beliefs"? Do you mean like opinions and values, or do you specifically mean belief about the post-life reality? If you mean the former, then it is easy to argue that religion is not required for this. Anybody can have opinions and morals. If you mean the latter, then I disagree. I think our existence is meaningful regardless of the supernatural. We are accountable to friends, family, and six billion other people in the world. The mistake you seem to be making (and this is only if your point was that we need religion or life is meaningless, so if not, then ignore this particular point) is that if there is no afterlife, then nothing we will do in this life matters at all. And the actuality is that after we've died and lost consciousness, it won't matter to us then. It will matter to us now. We don't need an afterlife to be concerned with our existence and making an impact on those around us.
2.Think...think....OH YEAH, uh, religions help do this as religions are basically are system of beliefs.
Religions do provide a system of beliefs (the morality of those systems is questionable), but at a great cost. You need to adhere to these morals and worship this/these god(s) or you will be punished. Most religious systems set up a Hellish place unless you pay the church and follow the commandments. Now, if a particular person needs a system of beliefs regarding an all-powerful but unrepresentable god that deeply cares about your sex life, that's fine. However, that and similar religious systems of belief aren't necessarily the only solutions to our need to have beliefs.

I know you were trolling, but I do have something on that point. Would it be okay to set up a system of beliefs about the supernatural and the afterlife based on Harry Potter or Jedi Knights or anything that is obviously fictitious? Do you think that the mere existence of a system of beliefs is more improtant than the truth of that system of beliefs? That is, is it better to believe something for the sake of believing it rather than honestly say "I don't have any reason to accept any of these beliefs"?
you necro a topic and then say we have to ignore your post? xD well done.
I think he might have been referring specifically to the Harry Potter point and not the whole post.
