Wht do we have religion? Because to me it seems that we only have religion to comfort you or the past. Religion also seems that it is supposed to heal sins. How do we know all of this without some proof? (I'm a christian) Like do we have any bones of adam and eve? I'm just trying to get answers to questions. Thank you!

well, i think i understand, basically Christianity (or religion) is a contradiction...i believe that is what your saying at least.

and i agree, but only in this format.

(with your same lettering)

A-B-C are core beliefs, Jesus Christ was an actual person, died on the cross for remission of our sins, Bible is the words of God, etc.

then there is D-E-F which is doctrine, theology, etc. Where I believe the paradox in Christianity is (i can't speak for all religions cause it would take too long and i know most about Christianity)

DEF are man made, therefore fallible. They can be helpful (but most times aren't) in some cases but are only to enhance ABC...which is the fundamentals or Christianity, which are divinity.

i don't know if that makes sense, and it's rather vague, but if you (key word) honestly, from an open position look at science's or any other's approach the same is true.

the real answer to all of this is there is only so far you can go with reason, before you have to decide for yourself, and i have found truth in being a follower of Christ.

you need religeon to have faith and so you can believe in something, and have a peace of mind. also so u can go to heaven and dont go to hell (that last part was for people who alrady have a religeon)

That's if that religion believes in such things. I've wondered where Christianity got hell from. In the Hebrew texts Hell means nothing, which means you cease to exist.

A good point, Iza. Certainly anyone's beliefs about anything at all - even everything they believe - can fall within this contradiction. I think in the modern era it's certainly not uncommon for people to reject certain aspects of any religious teaching.
But I guess to get back to the question - is the something inherent in the definition of religion that makes it necessary to have?
We would have to approach this without really questioning whether it's right or wrong. If religion has a purpose, it should be inherent in its definition, not in its truth function, right?

to asherlee,
Actually the word Gehenna is the Hebrew word for hell in Judaism and Christianity and the basis for the Islamic word for hell: Jahannam

to Moe,
I think either end of the debate is basically futile, because anything i can conjure up is relative and biased, as i think anything you say would be as well.

with that said, on a practical thought, religion inherently sets the standards of life.
but how to define those standards is relative to your point of view.

Personally, I reject all religion and just choose to live my life. I don't go to the trouble of labeling myself.

Yeah, people have religion and all they did in the really really early times, they would blame the gods if something went bad, where as today we are moving away from religion, and just blaming people today

Without religion you can know nothing. You can never trust Theory or Law or people, without some morality. What is good but the absence of bad, and vis-versa? What makes one thing good and one thing bad? Here's a very simple question, do you think terrorism is wrong? Duh, you might think. But why is death bad??? I know terrorism is bad, but that's because I believe in Jesus and the ten comandements. how could you know without religion???

Religion is created just like morality is. Terrorism is advocated in most religious texts (including Christianity). How do we know other things are "bad" like counterfeiting or smuggling. Those certainly aren't holy doctrines. Also, I don't see how death would be bad if you believe in god, since when you die you get to go to heaven or whatever you believe in.

Lol thats funny. Creating your own religion would make the world even crazier. Everyone would have their own religion!

What about babies? They certainly know something, and not necessarily right or wrong (morality). For example, the baby is first born and knows she is hungry and scared so she cries. She knows something and the first thing she knows isn't what she thinks is right or wrong.
