I suppose so, but it takes a bit of effort not to learn how to read, at least on a basic level. Also, there are Gov. grants and whatnot so there's no way someone can't afford a basic education. So, i would attribute most of the illiteracy to people who do not have the mental capacity to learn it.

It's just like saying not everyone can be in the labor force (children under 18, too old, Mentally unstable people, retards, ect.) The literacy test is to determine the literacy of "abled" people per se. So they do not include the mentally handicapped people.

This has got the be the stupidest question every, Yes, people should. You cant live in the world(at least well) without knowing how to read. if people didnt know how the read American wouldnt be a super power, we have (i mean had) our public school system to thank for our super power status.

May the fro be with you.

Yeah the people who can't read are the people on the streets with no homes. Luckily for them our president is going to pull a robinhood move and steal from the people who worked and earned their money and give it to the people who never worked a day in their lives.

VERY true napolian! It's really starting to make me mad... I've watched my family work to get where we are, and now we're going to get punished for working hard. It just doesn't seem right.

Reading is very very important. We should, if we like it or not.

I don't think they should be forced to read, but they definitely should read. I have been told it makes you smarter.

Yeah, I think I've heard that strange legend somewhere too.

But seriously, if you aren't pushed to read as a kid, how will you be able to work as an adult?

I think forcing people to read is pointless. Kids who hate to read will just use Spark Notes, and kids like me who love reading end up reading less because we're too busy trudging through some terribly boring "Classic"

And to the guys who were complaining about Obama's plans, you have it all so woefully wrong. His plan raises taxes on people making upward of 400k a year, and gives to the less filthy rich by mearly cutting the taxes of the middle class, not the lower class.

Either way the rich who work hard are paying more, and the people who don't work are paying less.

People definatly need to stay on topic here. The Obama admin is not up for debate here.

What I have to say here is that I think people should read and I think they do even if they think they don't want. It has already been pointed out that literacy is nessecary for a properly functioning society. Sure there are people out there that don't know how to read but if you'll notice none of them post in these forums. The reason for that is that reading is a nessecary part of this activity. If you can read you can't write so you can't post. I know a lot of people didn't enjoy learning to read as kids but these same people usually grow up and take the fact that they can for granted. I don't think people, once their through school, should be forced to read anything they don't want to but I don't think that not teaching kids to read is a good idea. The fact is that the way human society and economy works we are forced to read even if we don't realize it. We read the directions so we know how to cook our frozen pizzas, we read the sign that tells us we're in the lane for EXIT-270B, and the bills that come in our mail and e-mail telling us that we've gone over our texting limit and now owe the cell phone company a big pile of money. These are all just examples of course but my point remains valid.

200k. get it right.

He is taking more money from the upperclass to give it to the lower class so they can spend it and the money eventually flows back to the upperclass.
