Reading is a valuable skill, and in most places, an essential element in society. Reading teaches language and increases vocabulary. Without literacy, there would be no great authors or poets. No, you shouldn't be forced to read, but yo should at least learn how to.
If we are forced to read, we wont read. In school when I'm given a book report assignment on a certain genre I don't like, I don't do it, and yet can pull an A.
That is what school is for. Kids and teens are forced to read there, because it is a life skill and is essential in having a respectable life in our society. However, adults should not be forced to read. They already did it through school, and if they don't want to anymore they shouldn't have to. It's their choice if they want to continue learning or not.
Very good point Green. Kids and teens need to be pushed, not forced to read, as well as study math and science. If you don't get those core classes, you can't operate in society these days.
And to be off topic one more time: Obama thinks anything over 100k is "Upper class".
I think that reading is a very valuable skill. If you can't read you probably won't be able to pass middle or high school. And no college in the world is going to accept you if you can't read above an 8th grade level. And it helps you get a respectable job. Other than that you'lll be working in a factory your whole life and that's not fun at all. But, Kids shouldn't be forced to read becase that's wrong, but the y should at least be strongly encouraged, and taught about the good things about reading but definetley not forced. It should be their choice how to live their life.

I thought this was very well put. I, personally, love to read if I am interested in a subject or story. That I thinks is one of the key factors that makes people dislike reading, they have never been given or found anything to read that they truly had an interest in. In school kids are given books that are held up as classics or text books that are purely a teaching tool and a lot a of people base their entire opinion of reading on this extremely scope. If people sought out subjects they have a genuine interest in then perhaps they would enjoy reading more.
Reading should be a choice, but you would need to know the basics of everyday life so eventually you would be forced to read something espesially if you want a job one day.
But what are you asking when you say should we be forced to read? Are you asking should there be reading required to pass a grade or test or something? Or are you asking should adults force kids to read? Anyway im confused and will think off this topic more.
I personally think no because if they don't want too they shouldn't have too.
What's bad about reading? Sure, you might find other things funner but when you have spare time, sit down, and read a book! Everyone will find a book that they like. Plus, they teach you new words and information. You shouldn't be forced to read, but there's no cons that come out of it...
Only at school. Forcing somebody to read doesn't help him. Why? Because the person getting forced won't get any help from the book, if it's about learning. If he doesn't like the reading why will he learn from it? He will just forget the stuff he read. The best option is to tell the person that it's fun, and entertaining to read a book. Tell him he should try it. And then maybe the person will read.
I find the people who can't stand reading tend to be the same people I expect to grow up and one day earn the prestigious job of getting to collect mine and everyone else's garbage once a week.
