Is anyone into Astronomy? I know I am. There are alot of things that we do that are based on astronomy. We just don't know it. Here is a real and true example-

The anciet people always studied the sky. They knew the sky and the patterns of the stars like the back of their hand. Every star moves along the sky in the same pattern every year, and the ancient people knew that. But every once and a while there would be 5 stars that didn't move across the sky like the other stars. Those 5 stars were also alot brighter then the other stars. The ancient people didn't know how to explain these 5 bright stars that didn't follow the same pattern as the other stars. So the said that the 5 stars were gods. They also gave those 5 stars a name. They called those 5 stars 'wandering stars' or as we call them today, 'lanets' 5 of the planets in our solar system are visable in the night sky from earth, (mercury, veanus, mars, jupiter, and saturn). The ancient people knew nothing about planets, so they decided the 5 planets were Gods, because the planets are not only bright, but they don't follow the pattern that all of the stars do.

It might be hard to belive, but it is true. The fact that we can see planets at night is also true. Go outside any day that it isn't overcast between now and mid-march. There will be a super bright star. It will be over 3 times brighter then any other star in the sky. That super bright star is actually a planet, Veanus. It is so bright not only because it is so close to us, but also because of its color. Grab a decent pair of binoculars, and you will be able to see a yellow-orange color. That is The color of the immense clouds that are on Veanus.

Here is a good example on how things that we don't even think about are based on astronomy-

Have you ever wondered why we have 7 days? It the 7 days are for the 5 planets the ancient people could see, the sun, and the moon.
Monday is lunes in spanish. (pronounced lunase) Lunes is the day for the moon.
Tuesday is martes in spanish. Martes is the day for Mars.
Wednesday is miercoles in spanish. (pronounced mear-e-coles) Miercoles Is the day for Mercury.
Thursday is jueves in spanish. Jueves Is the day for Jupiter.
Friday is viernes in spanish. Viernes is the day for Veanus.
Saturday is sabado in spanish. Sabado is the day for Saturn.
Sunday is domingo in spanish. Domingo is the day for the sun.

So there you have it- 2 great examples on how Astronomy has shaped our lives in ways that we don't even think about. If we could see 6 planets in the sky, then we would have an 8 day week!

oh and also NASA is planning the DAWN mission which will reach ceres in 2015 for a better look.

cool!

yeah i kinda feel sorry for them because if that super solar storm does happen that mission and everything else goes boom

That is interesting. I read somewhere that average density of universe is 3 or 4 atoms per m^3(They didn't say of which element).

That would be interstellar hydrogen...

Intergalactic hydrogen is more like 1-2 atoms per cubic meter (if that much...)

There is still absolutly so proof that ceres was created in the astriod belt... And my sources include APOD and the NASA homepage... I'm not sure who is right, but I wouldn't be surprised if either one of us was wrong...

I have a telescope and I watch sometimes the stars, astronomy is nice.

I agree with thing thing I never said that ceres was not created in the astroid belt...it's propably some lucky piece of space shit which just managed to get enough mass to pull itself into a sphere....quick fact did u know that we are actually part of a dead star??when a star goes super nova it releases a whole lot of atoms that come together and form diff elements including carbon hydrogen and he which just hapen to be the chemical components of organic matter..

I also love watching the shooting stars go by when you are in the mountains.

Yup. Thats how pretty much everything was formed. I 100% belive in the Big Bang Theory, because when a huge star 'dies', it explodes. The remenants of these huge explosions are HUGE. The can stretch over 50 light years apart. Countless stars are formed by the materials left over from the star's explosion.

the stars are named after the gods as well

Was Arcturus a god? Cassiopeia? Ursa Major? A teapot? Didn't think so. Space is pretty interesting though. I hope that scientists find a way to get rid of the sun. That gets annoying when I'm riding my bike. One time the sun got in my eyes and I almost ran into a car and died. I regained my senses and went out of the way though. If I got hit I would've sued the sun. Most of you might not think it's possible but... Sorry, I got off-topic.

I've been studying Greek mythology lately and most of the stars and planets are named after factors from the Greeks.
Greek - Roman

Hermes - Mercury
Aphrodite - Venus
Ares - Mars
Zeus - Jupiter
Kronos - Saturn
Poseidon - Neptune
Hades - Pluto

The actual planet names came from the Roman version of the names. I just though that would be an interesting fact for everyone to know if they didn't know that.

@kipdon-the sun will start to die in the next 5 billion yrs from now.by start to die I mean that it would have converted all it's hydrogen fuel it helium when this happens it will burn helium and grow extremely large. The inner 2 planets will get absorbed by the sun.earth might get swallowed to but the sun might not grow soo large...then the sun being a very small non adventurous star will start shrinking and become the size of the earth..it will shine like a small white dot it the sky finally when it cools down it will start to dim and it will become a red duarf....it was a white duarf (am not sure I am spelling duarf correctly)when it was a white dot in the sky..oh btw while all this was happening the earth was getting fried and we the humans better not be in this planetary system then this happens...if the sun was big and adventurous it would have exploded when it was in it's big scary state(red giant)and it would have shrunk and become sooo dense and curve space time(the fabric of space)soo much it will propably become a black hole and that's when the REAL party starts

I remember reading that when the sun expands if it grows large enough that it's boundary consumes the Earth it may be of a low enough density that the heat would be low enough for things to survive but we would still technically be "in" the sun. Then again I think I read another article disproving it but I'm not sure what do you thinnk thingthingfreak?

That's impossible are u saying that the sun will become soo large that it's boundaries are less than 40â¢c???? Not gonna happen forget about it don't ever say that again or u risk being rediculed by every 1 around you. Quick fact did u know that if a large asteroid hits the earth and the earth miraculously stays in one piece,it might knock the earth out of orbit towards the sun. another quick fact the moon is moving away from the earth at a rate of 1.5inches a year....when the moon goes far enough for it's gravity to not affect us the earths orbit will go off and the earth will start tumbling around randomly in orbit then the weather system on earth will go crazy and we will all theoretically DIE >

Woah what are those crazy symbols...anyway I meant to say 40 degrees celsius and not 40â¢Celsius

I read somewhere about Moon's orbit growing, don't why it happens. No one gives any explanation. And how was it measured in the first place? I don't really believe that it is a fact.

No I didn't know that. Because it would take a very large object to kick us into Sun's worm embrace. And all of large objects in our solar system are already circling around the Sun.

Astronomy is so fascinating. ';.'/
