Is anyone into Astronomy? I know I am. There are alot of things that we do that are based on astronomy. We just don't know it. Here is a real and true example-
The anciet people always studied the sky. They knew the sky and the patterns of the stars like the back of their hand. Every star moves along the sky in the same pattern every year, and the ancient people knew that. But every once and a while there would be 5 stars that didn't move across the sky like the other stars. Those 5 stars were also alot brighter then the other stars. The ancient people didn't know how to explain these 5 bright stars that didn't follow the same pattern as the other stars. So the said that the 5 stars were gods. They also gave those 5 stars a name. They called those 5 stars 'wandering stars' or as we call them today, 'lanets' 5 of the planets in our solar system are visable in the night sky from earth, (mercury, veanus, mars, jupiter, and saturn). The ancient people knew nothing about planets, so they decided the 5 planets were Gods, because the planets are not only bright, but they don't follow the pattern that all of the stars do.
It might be hard to belive, but it is true. The fact that we can see planets at night is also true. Go outside any day that it isn't overcast between now and mid-march. There will be a super bright star. It will be over 3 times brighter then any other star in the sky. That super bright star is actually a planet, Veanus. It is so bright not only because it is so close to us, but also because of its color. Grab a decent pair of binoculars, and you will be able to see a yellow-orange color. That is The color of the immense clouds that are on Veanus.
Here is a good example on how things that we don't even think about are based on astronomy-
Have you ever wondered why we have 7 days? It the 7 days are for the 5 planets the ancient people could see, the sun, and the moon. Monday is lunes in spanish. (pronounced lunase) Lunes is the day for the moon. Tuesday is martes in spanish. Martes is the day for Mars. Wednesday is miercoles in spanish. (pronounced mear-e-coles) Miercoles Is the day for Mercury. Thursday is jueves in spanish. Jueves Is the day for Jupiter. Friday is viernes in spanish. Viernes is the day for Veanus. Saturday is sabado in spanish. Sabado is the day for Saturn. Sunday is domingo in spanish. Domingo is the day for the sun.
So there you have it- 2 great examples on how Astronomy has shaped our lives in ways that we don't even think about. If we could see 6 planets in the sky, then we would have an 8 day week!
In the Apollo missions the astronauts put some type of mirrors on the moon when the pple on earth fire a laser At the mirrors blah blah blah they can measure the distance between us and the moon.moon did mention the word miraculous didn't I?? Actually in the 2030s there is supposed to be a huge near earth object that comes really close but does not hit but if it comes in this special 15km wide space, earth gravity changes it's trajectory so that it comes around after a decade or so..and pwns the earth unless the pple of NASA changes it's trajectory by some artifical means...oh did I hear u say that the chances of getting hit by a large space rock was small????we they are pretty small BUT what the hell happened to the dinos???and this space that might hit us is almost the same size ...........oh wait sorry for not reading that first,u asked why the moon was moving away from us??? Well I think it is centrifial force...(am pretty sure I spelt that wrong)....â¢
you obvioulsy don;t know it's far too late for that.
And I doubt the moon would totally leave orbit. Aas it moved away the tidal forces would lower and so the spped it moves away would diminsih. It would also require infinite angular motion which the Earth doesn't have.
u asked why the moon was moving away from us??? Well I think it is centrifial force..
Man! It's not "centifial" force. Centrifugal force(due to the motion of the Moon) and centripetal force(due to the gravity of the Earth) are equal in the orbit in which the Moon rotates. That's why it doesn't collide with Earth but stays in circular motion. Someone already explained it.
So I, as Pixie, don't believe that the Moon is leaving us.
Yes the moon is leaving....cmon they have been measuring that for atleast the past decade..and how does no tidal force present affect the moons orbit???
and how does no tidal force present affect the moons orbit???
I seems to affect the speed it leaves the orbit. So it is unlikely the moon will ever leave the orbit of the Earth unless another body (like mars) pulls it into orbit with itself. However without this kind of outside interaction I don;t think it will leave the EArth's orbit.
I wouldn;t mind thingthingfreak clarifying some stuff astronomy isn;t really my thing so I'm not up too speed on all the terminology.
That was a vague answer...: /. Have not seen thingthingfreak active lately...this thread is the only reason I am still on AG how could I change the topic from the moon(this really does not interest me that much)to that super solarstorm(u can call it a "large spike" in solar activity if u want)this solar storm is supposed to happen 2011-2012 it so strong that It is gonna penetrate earths magnetic field like a wet paper bag and completely fry and burn all electronic devices....this is part of the 11year solar cycle. When it hits..if it hits it will throw humans back in time to the dark ages.......IS IT GONNA HAPPEN??

Sorry, I haven't been active in a while. I'll go through the replys left since I've been gone. And feel free to ask me any questions about astronomy, and I'll do my best to answer them.

lolz same here am really bored nowadays i will be checkin this thead every alt day or soo or if u want to be answered faster than that msg me on my profile O-<-<
No point in waiting zombie, not many people are interested in astronomy, not just on AG but in general. But you can always visit astronomyforum.net or any other similar site.
Speaking of astronomy I found a modern remake of "owers of 10". Personally I like the IBM's original version better. It's interesting that the way mater organize itself on grand scale is proportional to organization on microscopic scale.
yeah i kno thats the sad sad truth D: its really irritating...its almost as if i am rambling to my self when i try explaining something...like this 1 time i was explaining what dark energy was so that it would be easier to explain the big rip and after half an hour of rambling he didnt get it...HE DIDNT GET IT!!!!! OMG!!!

Which I find pretty stupid, because everything about astronomy is about 20,000,000,000,000 billion times more important then our pathetic lives. We humans are worth absolutely nothing in the whole universe. Everything that we know and that we have seen is estimated to be like a grain of sand compared to our solar system. Its just ridiculous. And the really sad part is: we don't grow up with astronomy being taught (usually) so it's really hard to picture whats out there. That also being said, its close to impossible to actually understand it. To actually understand the fact that there are so many other things out there. To understand how small we really are. Not even I can comprehend this sometimes, and I've been hooked on Astronomy for years now.

this is soo true because astromony is sooo deep it is pretty incredible if someone even knows what a black hole...must pple think they are just like those other *random* things floating out there....i once had a 1 hour long arguement with a real stupid dude who always believed what the teachers said...i said space outside our atmosphere is not a perfect vacum...he refuesed to believe in inter galactic matter...i tried telling him that how can a big ball of gas float around with nothin to contain it.there is bound to be some left overs...i dared not even go in the existence of dark matter or i risked being rediculed by the entire school...<__<

Hahaha, I know how you feel. I just found this clip on youtube:
Its a nice little stand-up clip that helps people understand astronomy. Or at least become a little aware of it. Oh, and it's pretty funny. I defiantly recommend watching it.
