Is anyone into Astronomy? I know I am. There are alot of things that we do that are based on astronomy. We just don't know it. Here is a real and true example-
The anciet people always studied the sky. They knew the sky and the patterns of the stars like the back of their hand. Every star moves along the sky in the same pattern every year, and the ancient people knew that. But every once and a while there would be 5 stars that didn't move across the sky like the other stars. Those 5 stars were also alot brighter then the other stars. The ancient people didn't know how to explain these 5 bright stars that didn't follow the same pattern as the other stars. So the said that the 5 stars were gods. They also gave those 5 stars a name. They called those 5 stars 'wandering stars' or as we call them today, 'lanets' 5 of the planets in our solar system are visable in the night sky from earth, (mercury, veanus, mars, jupiter, and saturn). The ancient people knew nothing about planets, so they decided the 5 planets were Gods, because the planets are not only bright, but they don't follow the pattern that all of the stars do.
It might be hard to belive, but it is true. The fact that we can see planets at night is also true. Go outside any day that it isn't overcast between now and mid-march. There will be a super bright star. It will be over 3 times brighter then any other star in the sky. That super bright star is actually a planet, Veanus. It is so bright not only because it is so close to us, but also because of its color. Grab a decent pair of binoculars, and you will be able to see a yellow-orange color. That is The color of the immense clouds that are on Veanus.
Here is a good example on how things that we don't even think about are based on astronomy-
Have you ever wondered why we have 7 days? It the 7 days are for the 5 planets the ancient people could see, the sun, and the moon. Monday is lunes in spanish. (pronounced lunase) Lunes is the day for the moon. Tuesday is martes in spanish. Martes is the day for Mars. Wednesday is miercoles in spanish. (pronounced mear-e-coles) Miercoles Is the day for Mercury. Thursday is jueves in spanish. Jueves Is the day for Jupiter. Friday is viernes in spanish. Viernes is the day for Veanus. Saturday is sabado in spanish. Sabado is the day for Saturn. Sunday is domingo in spanish. Domingo is the day for the sun.
So there you have it- 2 great examples on how Astronomy has shaped our lives in ways that we don't even think about. If we could see 6 planets in the sky, then we would have an 8 day week!
Which is the thing that creeps me out about astronomy, the scale of alot of it. The Milky Way is 100,000 light years across. Proxima Centauri is 4.2 light years away. And I am a mere 0.00000000000000018 light years tall the amaing insignificanse is great. an atom is 0.000000000000000000000000065 light years in diameter. I love the numbers involved in astronomy, the brilliant facts etc. that make your mind boggle
hey can we change the topic of this conversation to 'how the universe/earth is gonna *die*....' this most accepted theory and most straight forward theory is that trillions of years from now the universe will use up all its energy(heat) and the entire universe will become a cold lifeless heap of s**t..(boooooring!!) there is another theory that the gravitational effect of the contents of the universe will finally over come the force of dark energy which is theoretically making the universe expand and then the universe will start to implode and then finally become the size of a dot,atom,etc...then the big bang takes place all over again and the cycle starts again..(a little better but not the best) then there is the big rip...its on page 9...this is my personal favorite ...now coming to the destruction of the earth before the other senarios can kill it first...there is the usual sun eats earth thing... but there is something else that can destroy us(humans) in the the next 5 seconds...you all must have hears of gamma ray bursts(LOLZ at use of *you all*) those gamma ray bursts(grbs) have more energy than a 100 suns will give out in an entire lifetime....what if one of those bursts are aimed at the earth...i will leave you to ponder that question...
I love to think about the immse power and sheer force that gamma ray burst have. It is such an unimagiable blast that it is really hard to think about it. If a gamma ray burst was aimed at earth and it hit earth, well, there will be no more earth. Or anything in its path for that matter. Being ab;r to witness a GRB in real life would be an extraordinary thing. And maybe that will be a goal in my lifetime. To travel into space and get to witness a GRB. I guess that's just a crazy dream I suppose.
The Big Crunch has to be my favorite theory of how the universe will die. And then the big Bang will happen again. Just a continous circle of life. Amazing!

crazy and completely impossible... the gamma ray is an electromagnetic wave which cannot be seen with the naked eye...
If a gamma ray burst was aimed at earth and it hit earth, well, there will be no more earth
actually there would still be a earth bur the atmosphere would get super heated and every1 in the direct path of the ray would..erm well..be fried to a crisp...imagine that asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs....a direct hit from a grb would be the same thing(everything that was hit directly was destroyed, atmosphere super heated, everythin large and vulnerable died)but there you be no explosion no rocks flying everywhere nothing...just an unimaginable hot blast of heat....

That's pretty much one of the main reasons I like to study it too. It's really interesting to learn about, but it is incredibly hard to actually understand what it is. I have a hard time making a mental picture of anything beyond Earth. But it's when I look at Jupiter through my telescope, and actually see the details of it, and then when I think of how massive it is, I can get a somewhat good idea of what astronomy actually is. But other then that, its really hard for even me. I can't even begin to understand even a fraction of astronomy sitting here writing this, yet I know more about Astronomy then the average Adult ever will.
How could you not want to learn it. I mean, we will never know everything about space but everything that we do know and have figured out already is just a tiny tiny tiny fraction of what is out there in the endless forever going universe. I have loved space my whole my and I studied planets when I was but 4 and 5 years old. It is such a mind boggle subject to think about!
i'm not into it. it seems cool, but i don't want to learn it.
That is because you are arrogant and single minded. You are too busy locked up in your own little world to notice what is greater then you could ever imagine. I can not stress this enough- If you are not interested in astronomy, then your intelligence is below that of a dog. Astronomy is everything that ever has and ever will be, and you are too busy being an idiot. I know that sounds harsh, but if you don't have the mental capability to actually think about the stars and planets, and how massive they are, how far away they are, and what a wonder they truly are, then you have not lived. I study astronomy with such a passion that I would yell at you forever until you admitted that it is worth learning.

No it's not, it's because he'd rather spend his time learning about something else.

Wow, way to flame. That's like saying that if you aren't interested in psychology you're an idiot. Everyone has a mind, so why wouldn't everyone want to learn everything about it?
but if you don't have the mental capability to actually think about the stars and planets, and how massive they are, how far away they are, and what a wonder they truly are,
Having the mental capacity to think about it, and choosing to learn it are to different things.

Yelling at him for not studying it would be flaming him. Don't over react.
